The Corps recommended keeping Optima Lake under federal management

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed its Optima Lake disposition study in December 2024. Its report found continued federal interest in operating and maintaining the project for flood control, recreation, and fish and wildlife, and recommended against disposal. A future authorized lake or refuge crew could use a contractor sleeper trailer at a permitted work base.

The decision is important to nearby Hardesty, about four and a half miles from the lake, but it is a regional federal finding rather than a Hardesty town project.

Optima Dam prevented flood damages in 2023 and 2024

The Corps' current Optima study estimates the dam prevented about $126,000 in flood damages in 2023 and $27,000 in 2024, expressed in fiscal-year 2026 dollars. Those figures help explain why the agency recommended retaining the project even though the reservoir has not filled as planned.

If an authorized crew maintains project features, a portable restroom trailer could serve a remote site; it is not emergency equipment. They refer to downstream benefits across the project area, not a documented damage event within Hardesty.

Archaeologists excavated the original Hardesty before Optima Lake

The original Hardesty townsite stood four miles northeast of today's community and was partially excavated by archaeologists in 1975 before Optima Lake was created. OHS says the old settlement was near the Jones and Plummer Cattle Trail, where cowboys moved herds north to Kansas. The record connects a cattle-era place to a later federal water project, while making clear these are two different sites and periods.

A future field-history program could use a portable restroom trailer at an approved venue away from archaeological resources.

Hardesty's post office opened in 1887

The U.S. Post Office Department approved a Hardesty post office in 1887, naming it for Kansas rancher A. J. 'Jack' Hardesty, who held local interests. The early village had a store, saloon, wagon yard, and sod houses. A newspaper followed by 1889, when the Hardesty Times began serving readers on the cattle-trail settlement.

For a future local-history display, a portable restroom trailer could be provided at the event venue.

The railroad bypassed Hardesty for a new town 20 miles west

Hardesty's leaders lobbied the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway to build through their town. In 1901, the line instead went twenty miles west, where Sanford—later Guymon—was established. Many Hardesty residents and businesses moved there, and the newspaper followed. A future history event could use a portable restroom trailer for visitors at its gathering point.

In 1906, editor Richard Quinn wrote that 'Old Hardesty town is no more,' capturing a dramatic transport-driven relocation.

Residents revived the name Hardesty for a second rail town

In 1929, the Rock Island built a second line through Texas County and investors planned new townsites. They proposed calling one Williams, but residents pushed to reuse Hardesty, whose earlier townsite lay only a few miles away.

A future railway heritage project could use a contractor sleeper trailer for field researchers at an approved base. The new community therefore carried forward a name linked to a displaced settlement, even as its location and rail context changed.

Hardesty's 1931 directory listed a grain elevator and ice company

By 1931 the revived Hardesty had a café, grain elevator, ice company, hardware store, jeweler, lumber company, grocer, service station, and general store. Wheat farming was the prevalent enterprise, and natural-gas drilling began in the vicinity during the mid-1930s. The inventory shows a working rural town with several kinds of commerce before the Depression and dust storms limited growth.

A future agricultural history event could use a portable handwashing station station near food or equipment demonstrations.

Construction of Optima Dam began two miles north in 1966

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began constructing Optima Dam two miles north of Hardesty in 1966; the lake was impounded in 1978. The project brought a major federal works site into the area, and it remains a distinct regional landmark. The water body never reached the levels originally expected, a fact that helps explain the Corps' later disposition study.

For an authorized future maintenance crew, a contractor sleeper trailer could support work at a designated location.

A federal wildlife refuge was established in 1975

The federal government established Optima National Wildlife Refuge in 1975 as part of the wider lake project. OHS also records the refuge and the nearby wildlife management area as part of Hardesty's regional setting. A future refuge stewardship event could use a portable restroom trailer at an approved access point if facilities are needed.

USACE's current overview says low lake levels generally limit water-based recreation, with public use areas usually serving as land-access points.

The original Hardesty site is on the National Register

OHS notes the Old Hardesty Archaeological Site is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Its location predates the current town and was partially excavated before creation of Optima Lake.

Any future authorized survey could use a contractor sleeper trailer for researchers at an off-site base. The designation ties together the area's cattle-trail and settlement history, but it does not mean the site is open for public visits or that current archaeological work is planned.
