Goodwell was named for a railroad water well

Railroad workers called the town Goodwell because a well on the townsite supplied good water for the railway. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific line brought the town into being around 1902, and a post office opened in June 1903. A future rail or water-system field crew might use a contractor sleeper trailer at an approved base.

Goodwell’s first homes included dugouts and tents

Before permanent streets and sidewalks appeared, early residents lived in dugouts, tents, and shacks, with trails serving as streets and boardwalks as sidewalks. By 1908, businesses ranged from a grocery to a feed mill and livery stable. A future history-day program could place a portable restroom trailer near its outdoor interpretation area.

Three churches organized in Goodwell’s first years

Methodists organized a church in February 1904, Baptists in August, and a Church of Christ followed soon after. OHS later described these congregations as part of the community around Panhandle State students. At a future interfaith gathering, a temporary shower-restroom trailer could provide temporary washing facilities if the venue needs them.

An agricultural school helped Goodwell grow

The establishment of a secondary district agricultural school in 1909 helped Goodwell’s population rise; OHS estimated 350 residents by 1918. Education became a draw beyond the town itself. A future campus event could use a portable shower trailer for participants if the site requires temporary wash facilities.

Goodwell’s first school session met in a bank building

The new agricultural institution held its first session in the First State Bank building, which OHS later described as an office building on campus. By 1921 the school had become Panhandle Agricultural and Mechanical College. A future campus history event could set a portable restroom trailer near its visitor route.

Panhandle’s college took the OPSU name in 1974

The school’s institutional names changed over time: Panhandle Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1921, Panhandle State College of Agriculture and Applied Science in 1967, then Oklahoma Panhandle State University in 1974. Each name marks a different stage in a long educational story. A future campus event could use a portable restroom trailer at its venue.

At one time, six passenger and mail trains passed Goodwell daily

The Rock Island line was central to Goodwell’s formation, and OHS records that as many as six passenger and mail trains once passed through each day. The company’s financial difficulties in the 1950s preceded later line transfers, including to Union Pacific in 1988. A future authorized track crew could use a contractor sleeper trailer at a separate staging point.

A wood-frame Farmers Elevator went up in 1926

Goodwell’s Farmers Elevator was built as a wood-frame structure in 1926; a concrete elevator was added in 1930. The agricultural buildings document how grain handling supported the town beside its college and railway. If a future preservation survey visits the site, a contractor sleeper trailer could support researchers at an approved base.

The No Man’s Land Museum preserves the Panhandle’s history

Goodwell’s No Man’s Land Museum preserves local history in the Panhandle town that grew around rail, education, and farming. OHS also describes the ties former university students felt to the community. A future museum program could use a portable restroom trailer for visitors if its chosen event space has limited facilities.
