Howe’s fire department gained a newer pumper by 2025

LeFlore County commissioners’ November 2025 minutes record approval of a 2008 Sparta pumper for Howe Fire Department. The purchase price was $63,995, with a 1991 Federal Motors truck valued at $4,500 as trade-in, leaving $59,495 net. A portable handwashing station station might be useful at a future authorized equipment-training day where responders are working outdoors.

The minutes confirm the county action to benefit the Howe department; they do not say when the truck entered service or describe a particular fire response. That keeps the procurement distinct from an incident report.

A 2022 tornado track began east of Howe

National Weather Service records list a May 2, 2022 EF1 tornado beginning 3.6 miles east-northeast of Howe and continuing toward Monroe. The track measured 5.6 miles, reached an estimated 1,400-yard width, and produced no recorded fatalities or injuries. If a future authorized inspection team is assigned to a similar rural corridor, a contractor sleeper trailer could reduce repeated travel between shifts.

This was a county track beginning outside the town, not a report that it crossed Howe’s streets. The NWS database provides geographic and intensity context while avoiding claims about damage inside the municipality.

Howe was first known as Klondike

OHS says this Choctaw Nation settlement originally went by Klondike. Residents changed the name to Howe after the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad passed through in 1895–96, honoring railroad director Herbert Howe. A future heritage event about this name change might use a portable restroom trailer at an approved site near its history display.

The town’s post office opened in 1898, while a second railroad also built to the community that year. The settlement’s identity was therefore shaped by both local naming and a growing transportation network.

A coal company built one hundred coke ovens west of Howe

Beginning in 1899, the Mexican Gulf Coal and Transportation Company constructed one hundred coke ovens west of Howe. Financial difficulties later led to the sale of its assets to Degnan and McConnell Coal and Coke Company; the mines continued while the ovens shut down. A contractor sleeper trailer could support a future authorized industrial-history survey along the former works area.

Demand returned during World War I, when Howe-McCurtain Coal and Coke reopened the ovens. The sequence shows both an early business setback and a later revival, rather than one uninterrupted industrial operation.

A WPA school campus still marks Howe’s education history

The Howe School Campus nomination identifies two Works Progress Administration buildings: the elementary school and high school. The high school’s red-brick, single-story block was approximately 85 by 64 feet and included at least six classrooms. If alumni plan an approved reunion or preservation program, a temporary shower-restroom trailer could serve guests at a site without enough modern facilities.

The nomination records the buildings as public and educational and describes them as being in excellent condition when surveyed. It does not establish their present use or condition, so current access should not be assumed.

Howe’s population swelled during an oil-era peak

OHS records 626 residents in 1900, a dip to 538 by 1910, and a rise to 711 in 1920 as the town’s coal, agricultural, and trade economy shifted. The population later reached 802 in 2010 and was 623 in 2020. For a future temporary municipal facility during a public census or planning event, a portable restroom trailer can help a crowded venue manage visitor flow.

These are census snapshots separated by decades, not a continuous annual series. The record supports a long-run pattern of early fluctuations and later contraction, without assigning every change to one single employer.

Howe’s 1961 tornado devastated homes

A 1961 tornado struck Howe and neighboring Reichter, killing thirteen people, injuring fifty-seven, and destroying more than fifty residences, according to OHS. The scale of loss reshaped a small community’s recovery. A portable shower trailer could support a future authorized disaster-response staging area if residents or crews had to remain on site for extended cleanup.

OHS attributes the event to the town and nearby village together; it does not break every casualty or damaged home down by place. The article preserves that combined count rather than assigning all losses to Howe alone.

County approved a road-funding account in Howe’s region

In the same November 2025 minutes that addressed Howe Fire Department’s pumper, LeFlore County commissioners approved an account to receive $75,000 from the Oklahoma Conservation Commission’s Unpaved Road Grant for County Commissioner District 2. It is regional roadway funding, not a project inside Howe’s limits. An authorized maintenance crew on an eligible road could use a contractor sleeper trailer during an extended work window.

The minutes do not identify a particular road segment or say the work was complete. The distinction matters because public funds and county crews can serve a district broader than the town named on this page.

Howe’s first coal boom had several companion industries

At the start of the twentieth century Howe’s economy combined coal and coke with cotton and potatoes. In 1901 the town had four doctors, four drugstores, general stores, a gin, and a hotel, according to OHS. A future local-industry program could place a portable restroom trailer near its approved gathering space for visitors and presenters.

The source’s 1901 business list gives a sense of how a small mining and farming center supported residents beyond the mine site. It is a dated snapshot, not a directory of present-day Howe businesses.

Rail connections opened outside markets to Howe

Two railroads reached Howe in the late 1890s: the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf line in 1895–96 and the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad in 1898. The town’s coal, coke, cotton, and potatoes could move through those networks. During any future authorized rail-corridor inspection, a portable handwashing station station could serve workers handling tools or track materials.

OHS traces the lines through different corporate histories, including the later leases and acquisitions. The article does not imply that either historical railroad currently offers service at Howe.
