Fanshawe’s post office predated the town plat by eleven years

The community received its postal designation in 1891, though it was not surveyed and platted until August 29, 1902. Fanshawe therefore had a name and mail connection before it became a formally laid-out town. A future local-history event could welcome visitors with a event restroom trailer at a public site.

A railroad naming draw gave Fanshawe its name

The Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad built through the area in 1889–90. During an inspection trip, executives and investors drew station names from a hat; Fanshawe honored John R. Fanshawe, a Philadelphia railroad employee. A rail-history walk could put a heritage walk restroom trailer at its gathering point, away from the route.

Lumber, coal and farming supported early Fanshawe

Fanshawe’s early economy included lumbering, coal mining, sawmilling, farming, stock raising and railroad or road work. By 1911, about one hundred residents supported two grocers and two general stores and had telephone service. An outdoor industry-history display could use a event restroom trailer for visitors while keeping the story grounded in that documented mix of work.

A 1929 fire destroyed most of Fanshawe’s business district

Most of Fanshawe’s business district was destroyed by fire in 1929. The town’s later economy relied on timber, agriculture and pulpwood work, but the loss marked a break in its commercial landscape. If a future downtown repair project needs crews, a reconstruction restroom trailer could serve from a cleared base without occupying storefronts.

Two sawmills and a sorghum mill operated near Fanshawe in 1918

In 1918, Fanshawe had an estimated population of 135, two sawmills and one sorghum mill. Those operations tied forest products and farm processing into the same small economy. For a future mill-equipment installation, portable handwashing stations stations could provide a designated place for workers to clean up before meals.

Wister Dam altered farming south of Fanshawe

The Army Corps completed Wister Dam on Fourche Maline Creek in 1949, south of Fanshawe. The resulting lake inundated fertile bottomland and, according to OHS, forced some farmers to relocate or leave farming. The dam is regional context, not a claim that Fanshawe was flooded. A future lake-site crew might use a public-works restroom trailer at an approved base.

A rail spur carried pulpwood from Fanshawe’s hills

By mid-century, pulpwood harvesting had become a major industry around Fanshawe. A large pulpwood yard and rail spur moved the timber, while truck owners hauled wood from the hills to dealers. If a present-day forestry crew needs a base, a forestry crew restroom trailer could support the job without implying the historic spur remains active.

Fanshawe annexed a large rural area in 1963

On June 7, 1963, Fanshawe annexed approximately twenty-two square miles of rural land. Its population rose to 199 in 1970 and 416 in 1980, then stood at 310 in 2020. The annexation expanded the town’s mapped reach far beyond the original settlement. A future utility project across that area could use a utility crew restroom trailer for crews at remote sites.

Chicken houses added income for Fanshawe ranchers

Beginning in the 1950s, ranchers around Fanshawe built large chicken houses to raise broilers and supplement cattle income. Poultry joined an economy that also relied on logging and rock hauling. For a future poultry-barn upgrade, a farm construction restroom trailer can support contractors working outside active animal areas.

WPA crews built Fanshawe’s sandstone school from 1938 to 1940

Fanshawe’s school campus includes a sandstone gymnasium and a four-room school built between 1938 and 1940. The State Historic Preservation Office links the WPA project to jobs for miners who had been out of work and describes the native stonework. During future preservation, a preservation crew restroom trailer could serve a separate contractor base.
