ODOT listed bridge work north of Hendrix in 2025

The Oklahoma Transportation Commission’s 2025 bid record included bridge and approach work on NS 371, known locally as Hendrix Road, over Web Creek about seven-tenths of a mile north of Hendrix. A contractor sleeper trailer could support a future authorized field crew if comparable work is scheduled nearby.

The record is a bid listing and identifies a county road outside the town center; it does not establish a closure within Hendrix or completion. The work concerns a county-road bridge north of town; it is not a project on Hendrix’s downtown streets.

A store and post office came before Hendrix’s rail stop

James A. Hendrix operated an early general store, and the post office department established service there in 1909. The railroad stop followed after residents pressed the Missouri, Oklahoma and Gulf Railway for a sidetrack. A future local-history exhibit could use a portable restroom trailer at a permitted gathering place.

OHS identifies Hendrix as both the store owner and first postmaster. The article distinguishes the postal beginning from the later rail-town milestone. The store and post office make the town’s early civic identity visible before the railroad stop acquired the separate Kemp City name.

Kemp residents won a rail stop after a court fight

About fifty residents of nearby Kemp petitioned the Oklahoma Corporation Commission for a sidetrack and station at Kemp City, where present-day Hendrix stands. The commission ordered the railroad to comply; the Missouri, Oklahoma and Gulf appealed, and the state Supreme Court upheld the order in 1911. A temporary shower-restroom trailer could suit a future public lecture about the case.

The case makes the town’s origin unusually well documented in both local history and a published court decision. The station was called Kemp City at the time. The 1911 decision made access to rail service a matter for state regulators and courts, not just a private railroad choice.

Hendrix and Kemp City were names for the same rail settlement

For the first half of the twentieth century, Hendrix served as the postal name while Kemp City remained a common name for the rail settlement. Many businesses from Kemp shifted to the new stop, including the bank. A future heritage walk could use a portable restroom trailer at its start point for attendees.

The split naming reflects the sequence of local post-office service and railroad construction; it was not two separate towns located on the same block. Keeping both names in the account helps readers interpret old business notices and rail records without mistaking one place for two.

A 1916 tornado destroyed much of Hendrix

OHS records that a tornado in 1916 destroyed most of Hendrix, including its bank, and killed many residents. Some businesses did not rebuild, while others returned and the post office moved into the town proper. A modern memorial or severe-weather preparedness event could use a portable restroom trailer for attendees at an approved venue.

The historical account gives a stark but brief description; it does not supply a final casualty count, so none is added here. The source describes widespread town damage but gives no final casualty count, so a precise number should not be supplied.

Bloomfield Academy stood north of present-day Hendrix

The National Register record traces Bloomfield Academy to an 1852 school established by the Methodist Episcopal Church for Chickasaw women. The campus lay north of the present town of Hendrix, before the railroad-era community formed. A future educational history program might use a temporary shower-restroom trailer for participants at a separate approved venue.

The academy moved to Ardmore in 1914; it is a regional historic institution rather than a school inside the later Hendrix townsite. The academy was established in 1852, decades before the rail town formed, and its site lay north of present-day Hendrix.

The academy’s history predates the town by decades

Bloomfield Academy began before the rail settlement and later operated as a Chickasaw school north of Hendrix. Its timeline puts local community history within a much older Chickasaw educational landscape. A portable restroom trailer could support a future public talk or exhibit at an authorized venue, not at the historic campus unless access is approved.

The National Register nomination describes the academy and its subsequent move; it does not claim the school continued at Hendrix after 1914. That chronology places the school in the area’s earlier Chickasaw history rather than presenting it as a Hendrix public school.

Hendrix had a varied business district by 1911

By 1911, OHS lists a telephone exchange, sawmill, three merchants, saloon, barber, livery stable, contractor, and real-estate office in the new community. Those businesses reflect a growing service center, not just a railroad station. If a modern heritage festival highlights the period, a portable restroom trailer could serve the event at its approved site.

The source is a snapshot from the early town years; it does not imply the businesses or buildings survive today. The early business list includes skilled trades and professional services as well as retail, showing the town’s role beyond crop shipping.

The railroad remained central until its 1965 abandonment

The Missouri, Oklahoma and Gulf line connected the settlement south toward Texas, but the railroad abandoned its tracks through Hendrix in 1965. By then the rail-centered origin had shaped the town for decades. A future transportation-history program could use a contractor sleeper trailer for visiting presenters staying overnight.

OHS records the abandonment year and separately notes a 1967 petition to settle the town’s official name. The abandonment ended the railroad’s local role; the official town-name decision followed in 1967.

Residents formally settled the town’s name in 1967

After decades when Hendrix and Kemp City were both used, Bryan County commissioners officially renamed the town Hendrix in 1967 following a residents’ petition. The decision formalized the postal name as the town’s public identity. A future community archive presentation could use a portable restroom trailer for attendees.

The official naming action followed the railroad’s 1965 abandonment, another change in a place whose identity had long been tied to transportation. The petition shows residents formally chose the postal name after the transportation identity that had shaped the settlement faded.
