When the Red River took Colbert’s bridge in 1908

Colbert’s river crossing has had to be rebuilt more than once. The Oklahoma Historical Society records that a flood destroyed the Red River Bridge Company’s toll bridge in 1908 and that the company erected a replacement. An earlier flood had destroyed both the railroad and wagon bridges, temporarily putting ferry boats back to work.

For a modern bridge-repair assignment near Colbert, the river still determines where a crew can be based. Overnight accommodation in a contractor sleeper trailer would need an approved property on accessible ground, with a delivery route that does not depend on the damaged crossing. Working out which side of the river people, tools and service vehicles can reach is part of making that accommodation useful.

Colbert’s post office dates to 1853

A post office opened in the community on November 17, 1853, before Colbert had its later railroad-era townsite. A future local-history gathering about the early settlement could include a portable restroom trailer if organizers need temporary facilities. The Oklahoma Historical Society says the settlement was named for Benjamin Franklin Colbert, a Chickasaw leader whose family held a prominent role in the area.

B.F. Colbert operated a Red River ferry

Before the bridge, B.F. Colbert ran a ferry across the Red River. If researchers ever mount an outdoor exhibit about river travel, a shower and restroom combination trailer could offer a compact temporary facility near the interpretive site, where permitted. The Oklahoma Historical Society records that he carried travelers without charge, making the crossing a service rather than a toll business in its early form.

A ferry crossing joined the Butterfield mail route

The Red River crossing at Colbert’s ferry became a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route in 1858. A future historical demonstration involving route interpreters could consider a contractor sleeper trailer for a crew staying overnight, but the article describes the 1858 route only. That placed the settlement in a long-distance mail network before Oklahoma statehood.

The Katy railroad reached Colbert in 1872

The Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway passed through Colbert in 1872 on its way to Denison, Texas. The line altered the settlement’s transport options long before the town was platted in 1899. If a future rail-history project required extended on-site work, organizers might look at a portable shower trailer for crew use after confirming water and wastewater service.

Colbert’s townsite was platted in 1899

Rail service preceded Colbert’s formal townsite: the Oklahoma Historical Society dates the plat to 1899, more than two decades after the Katy line arrived. For a future downtown survey or preservation project, a mobile laundry trailer could serve a small field crew working across several days. A bank followed in 1906 as cotton and peanut farming supplied the surrounding economy.

Cotton and peanuts shaped Colbert’s farm trade

Colbert’s early commercial life served farms producing cotton and peanuts, the Oklahoma Historical Society records. At a future farm-history event, a portable restroom trailer could be considered for visitors if the venue lacks permanent facilities and the landowner approves placement. That agricultural base explains why the town’s bank and stores mattered beyond the blocks beside the railroad.

A new bridge rose after the 1908 flood

The Red River flood that destroyed Colbert’s toll bridge in 1908 is already covered in the existing page article. A future public program about the bridge dispute could arrange a portable shower trailer for staff at a remote exhibit site, subject to access and utilities. The later chapter was a replacement bridge completed in 1915, followed by conflict over a proposed free crossing that escalated into the Red River Bridge War.

Project planning questions

Colbert workforce facility FAQs.

Can you help plan a man camp near Colbert?

Send us the address, dates, and number of people staying. Tell us who will share sleeping space and which portable shower, bathroom, and laundry facilities you need. We'll discuss the available layouts with you.

Can I ask for a portable bathroom or shower on its own?

Tell us which facility you need and what is already available at the property. We can review a portable restroom trailer, mobile shower, or combined unit for the job.

How do I choose a portable sleeper layout?

Start with the rooming arrangements. A crew sharing bunk space has different needs from staff who need separate rooms. The model pages show photos and published details to help you compare.

What should I send before discussing delivery?

The address, preferred dates, crew size, and a description of the entrance and available space are useful. Include what you know about power, water, and wastewater connections so we can talk through placement.

The free-bridge dispute drew state attention

A proposal for a free Red River bridge challenged the toll crossing and prompted the confrontation remembered as the Red River Bridge War. The Oklahoma Historical Society places Colbert within that transportation dispute, which unfolded after the 1915 bridge replacement. If an educational tour revisited the crossing, a portable restroom trailer could be considered for a temporary visitor stop without implying any present event or service at the historic site.

Lake Texoma later added a recreation economy nearby

Agriculture and rail traffic were not Colbert’s only regional connections: the Oklahoma Historical Society also notes tourism associated with Lake Texoma, which lies west of town. A future event serving visitors near town could assess a shower and restroom combination trailer if permanent restrooms and showers are insufficient. The lake’s arrival broadened the area’s visitor economy, though it does not mean every lake activity occurs inside Colbert.
