Before Gerty, travelers stopped at a place called Buzzard Flop

The settlement’s original name was Buzzard Flop. Travelers and freight wagons used it as a rest stop on a route from Fort Smith through the Choctaw Nation to Stonewall, drawn by clear spring water and level camping ground. A future walking-tour group could stage a portable restroom trailer near its meeting place, not at a historic spring without permission.

A post office named Guertie opened in 1894

James S. Raydon built a cabin and grocery store in 1893 and established the community’s post office, approved on June 15, 1894. It was named Guertie for his daughter. The postal record gives the small settlement a documented identity before town lots were sold. A future exhibit could use a portable restroom trailer for visitors at its venue.

Mail mix-ups helped settle Gerty’s changing name

The post office became Raydon in 1907, then returned to Guertie before the spelling changed to Gerty in 1910. Residents had been receiving mail intended for Ragan, and the department adjusted the name to avoid confusion with Guthrie. A future postal-history display could include a portable restroom trailer at its outdoor venue.

Farmers cultivated a wide range of crops around Gerty

As new settlers arrived, they leased and cultivated land, growing cotton, corn, wheat, oats, and fruit. OHS places this activity in the Choctaw Nation before Oklahoma statehood. The varied crops help distinguish the agricultural story from the town’s earlier trail-stop role. A future farm demonstration could use a portable handwashing station station for participants.

The railroad passed ten miles north of Guertie

The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway built its line ten miles north of Guertie in 1891. The town therefore developed without a nearby rail station, relying on roads and its surrounding agricultural community. A future county-road crew working in the area could use a contractor sleeper trailer at an approved field base.

Gerty’s first school relied on donated labor and lumber

Subscription schools first served Gerty before a two-story frame building went up in 1903. Residents donated money and labor, and the lumber was freighted from the Kiamichi Mountains. That community effort makes education part of the town’s settlement history. A future alumni event could use a portable restroom trailer if the outdoor venue needs one.

Neighboring school districts joined Gerty’s district

Gatewood and Lawrence districts consolidated with Gerty in 1923; Social Hill followed in 1947. The school district therefore served a wider area than the town alone. A future outdoor school reunion could use a temporary shower-restroom trailer for participants if the site lacks shower and restroom facilities.

Gerty’s first accredited high-school class graduated in 1929

Gerty’s first class to complete an accredited high-school course graduated in 1929. By 1936, 170 students attended grade school and 55 were in high school, figures that show the district’s regional reach at the time. A future alumni gathering could place a portable restroom trailer near its event area.

Can the facilities be coordinated as one site plan?

Yes. Share how the units need to work together, along with placement, utility, delivery access, and servicing requirements. Final configuration and availability are confirmed for the project.

A project address, crew size, rooming needs, dates, access and placement details, available utilities, and the supporting services you want to include.

The Gerty district served 28 students by 2000

The Gerty School District served 28 students in 2000, down from the combined grade- and high-school totals recorded in 1936. The later number reflects a smaller rural district at that time, not present-day enrollment. A future school-community event could choose a portable restroom trailer only after confirming the venue’s current facilities.

Gerty had 95 residents in the 2020 census

Gerty’s population rose and fell across the twentieth century, reaching 95 in April 2020. The community continued to serve a surrounding agricultural area, while some residents worked in Holdenville or Coalgate, according to OHS. A future regional gathering might use a temporary shower-restroom trailer if its venue needs temporary facilities.
