Newburg’s post office opened north of today’s Atwood

The new settlement took the Atwood name in December 1909

In December 1909, residents named their settlement Atwood for Chester Coleman Atwood, one of the townsite owners. The former Newburg remained about a mile north.

A 1992 tornado tracked through Atwood toward the north

The NWS Hughes County record lists an F1 tornado on May 11, 1992, beginning five miles southwest of Atwood, passing through town and ending two miles northeast.
