The May 2015 tornado developed southwest of Elmer

The Elmer–Tipton–Snyder tornado began southwest of Elmer on May 16, 2015, then crossed briefly into Texas before returning to Oklahoma southeast of town. The NWS event account follows it along roughly 35 miles toward Snyder. A repair team working a corridor of that length could use combined shower and restroom trailers at a shared base if visiting workers needed to remain near their assignments. Joining bathrooms and showers at one site would still require dependable clean water, power and wastewater servicing, with capacity based on the shifts using it. The storm itself persisted for more than an hour. Its path, rather than the list of towns in its name, would guide where a future contractor put the support facilities.

Elmer’s first post office opened in 1902

W. T. Thaggard and J. H. Barr founded Elmer in 1901. A year later G. W. Ross opened the town’s first hotel, and a post office began serving the settlement on February 18 with Benjamin F. Flowers as postmaster. Those early civic and commercial details place Elmer’s start before its railway connection. For a future rural records project, sleeper trailers could give a small team a temporary place to rest between field visits.

A railway official gave Elmer its name

The town was named for Elmer W. Slocum, an official of the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway. The Oklahoma Historical Society notes that the railway’s later name changed, too: after the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe took over the line. A historian mapping railroad-era place names could work from a temporary field base such as sleeper trailers, with access arranged before visiting private property.

The KMO line reached Elmer in 1908

The Kansas City, Mexico and Orient laid its line through Elmer in 1908, linking the town to a regional route that later became part of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe system. The date came six years after the post office opened and seven after the town was founded. If a future transport survey covered several rural sites, portable shower trailers could support overnight stays near the route while keeping all site access properly authorized.

Four kinds of businesses supported Elmer’s farm economy

Elmer’s economy relied on agriculture, and early businesses reflected that role: two banks, two cotton gins, a blacksmith shop and several lumberyards. The mix joined farm processing and credit with repair and building supplies. The OHS account does not give exact opening dates for each business, so this is a portrait of the town’s early service base rather than a year-by-year directory. A future farm-site crew could use portable handwashing stations for handwashing near an authorized work area.

Elmer’s newspapers carried two different town names

The Elmer Record and the Elmer Dispatch are among the early newspapers named in the Oklahoma Historical Society’s account. Their titles preserve how local reporting was branded in a town that had developed around both agriculture and the railroad. For an authorized newspaper-archive digitization effort, combined shower and restroom trailers could provide a small crew with washing and restroom access at a temporary workspace; the source does not indicate whether either paper’s issues survive.

Elmer residents voted unanimously to incorporate in 1925

On December 21, 1925, Elmer residents voted unanimously to incorporate the town. The Oklahoma Historical Society records the vote as a clear civic milestone, separate from the settlement’s 1901 founding and later railway connection. A modern public works contractor supporting a future town improvement could consider portable restroom trailers for a field crew, but the historic incorporation record does not describe today’s municipal facilities.

Elmer counted 288 residents in 1930

Elmer’s population reached 288 in the 1930 census, the highest figure in the Oklahoma Historical Society’s town history. The entry then records a long decline, with 96 residents in both 2000 and 2010. These counts describe different census points and do not identify why individual residents left or stayed. For a future gathering with visitors arriving from nearby towns, portable restroom trailers could be sized from a current headcount rather than historical population.

The 2020 census counted 64 people in Elmer

The Oklahoma Historical Society reports 64 residents in Elmer in the 2020 census, down from 96 in 2010. Elmer also served as a bedroom community for people working in larger nearby towns, according to the same entry. The small count is a dated snapshot, not a measure of daily activity or the number of people who travel through. If a future community event welcomed former residents back, combined shower and restroom trailers could help provide temporary public access.

Elmer’s county changed when Oklahoma became a state

Elmer lay in Greer County until Jackson County was created from Greer’s southern portion at Oklahoma statehood in 1907. That administrative shift matters when searching early land, school or business records: the same town appears under different county contexts depending on the document date. A historical survey team working across the boundary could use sleeper trailers as a temporary rest point, while checking original records for the jurisdiction in force at the time.
