Bernice moved before Pensacola Dam filled the old town site

Bernice’s first flood story was a relocation. The town still sits by the Horse Creek arm of Grand Lake. If a future high-water response is staged nearby, a portable restroom trailer for a shoreline response crew at a land-side site above the water’s edge could keep facilities close to the crew without putting equipment in the creek access.

After Oklahoma decided to build Pensacola Dam, the original town site was found to lie in the floodplain. Residents platted the present town site in December 1939; the dam was completed in 1940, and salvageable homes and buildings were moved out of Old Bernice by that summer.

A 1980 tornado destroyed a mobile-home park at Bernice

The National Weather Service’s Delaware County record traces an F3 tornado northeast from the Cleora area to Bernice and across the western shore of Grand Lake on April 7, 1980. For a future damage survey along the lake roads, a portable handwashing station for storm assessment crews at a designated crew meeting point could put handwashing near the field team while keeping the survey route open.

The report says one mobile-home park was destroyed at Bernice; it does not attribute every damage total along the tornado’s full path to the town.

Delaware County appeared in the 2007 eastern Oklahoma ice-storm record

The National Weather Service lists Delaware among the counties included in the eastern Oklahoma ice storm of December 8–11, 2007. Its regional account describes freezing rain as the main precipitation and reports one to two inches of ice on trees and power lines along a band near Bristow, Tulsa, Vinita, and Miami; that measurement is for the band, not a Bernice reading.

If a future ice response keeps line crews in the county for several days, a mobile sleeper trailer for utility restoration crews at their base could put overnight quarters near the assignment. A mobile laundry trailer for restoration workwear nearby would let them handle workwear between shifts.

OWRB approved a grant for a Bernice–Ketchum water connection

In January 2025, the Oklahoma Water Resources Board approved an $85,168 REAP grant for the Bernice Public Works Authority. The plan was to connect Bernice to Ketchum for a higher-quality primary water supply while keeping Bernice’s existing well as backup. During the planned tie-in work, a portable restroom trailer for water-system work placed at the contractor’s staging point could keep restroom access near the pump and connection work if nearby building facilities are out of reach.

It also proposed generators for the connection pump station and the well site; the grant release does not say the work is complete.

Dock repair has been part of Bernice’s lake trade for decades

Indian Hills Marina’s current TravelOK listing places its full-service operation at 415 Park Drive in Bernice and includes boat rentals, a gas dock, covered slips, marine repair, and a launch ramp. When a future dock-service job is set away from the marina’s regular facilities, a shower and restroom trailer for marina service work at the shore-side work area could give the repair crew nearby shower and restroom access without taking over the launch ramp.

A 2016 interview with Jerry’s Dock & Construction, also based in Bernice, described a family business that had been operating for more than 40 years; owner Chad Crouse said he spent his first years building and repairing docks on the water.

ODOT replaced the SH-85A bridge over Horse Creek near Bernice

ODOT’s March 2021 advisory said a $14 million replacement of the structurally deficient SH-85A bridge over Horse Creek had begun near Bernice, with temporary signals taking traffic one direction at a time. The department’s construction report later gives October 20, 2025 as the contract completion date for the bridge-and-approaches job, located southwest of the SH-125 junction in Bernice.

For another extended bridge contract, a mobile sleeper trailer for bridge contractors at an approved work base could give an out-of-area specialist crew a place to stay close to the job instead of commuting from a distant lodging site.

Bernice’s first business district included a grain elevator

By 1918, the original Bernice had a grain elevator and flour mill alongside a sawmill, hotel, bank, and general stores. For a future maintenance job at a Delaware County farm, a portable handwashing station for agricultural maintenance crews beside the work area could give crews a place to wash up before they return to their vehicles or equipment.

The Oklahoma Historical Society describes it as an agricultural and railroad community. The 2022 Census of Agriculture counted 1,228 farms in Delaware County and $508.8 million in farm products sold; those are county totals, not figures for the town itself.

GRDA water tests traced a 2021 bloom beneath Bernice Bridge

In June 2021, the Grand River Dam Authority confirmed a blue-green algae bloom in the Horse Creek arm of Grand Lake after water-quality testing. GRDA reported the bloom extending from Fly Creek down Horse Creek and out under Bernice Bridge into the main lake.

For a future repeat sampling run, a portable restroom trailer for a shoreline monitoring crew at a permitted land-side access point could keep restroom access near the field team while leaving the shoreline and boat approaches clear.

A state fiber award lists 1,118 Delaware County locations

Oklahoma’s broadband office lists 142 approved ARPA SLFRF projects across 57 counties. That is a county-level award, not proof of a live line on a Bernice street. If an awarded route later brings an extended splice crew into the area, a shared mobile sleeper trailer for a rural fiber crew at a selected base could give the team overnight quarters close to its work.

In its approved-project file, Northeast Rural Services, doing business as BOLT Fiber Services, has a Delaware County fiber entry valued at $9.4 million and listing 1,118 locations.

ODOT’s FY2029 county plan lists three bridges near Bernice

The 2026–2030 County Improvements for Roads and Bridges plan schedules a Delaware County project for FY2029: three county bridges over Fly Creek and a tributary, about a mile north of the SH-85/SH-85A junction near Bernice. The work-plan entry estimates a one-mile project at $1.612 million.

If the grouped crossings proceed as planned, a mobile laundry trailer for county bridge crews at the contractor’s field base could let a crew wash workwear between site shifts instead of carrying it from one rural crossing to the next.
