Jefferson began as a railroad water stop called Pond Creek

The Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway selected Jefferson’s site for a station with a water supply in 1889–90. OHS says the settlement was first called Pond Creek before its post office became Jefferson in January 1894. The rail stop was a practical reason for the town’s location, and a portable restroom trailer could support an authorized heritage walk tracing the old rail-era center.

The modern town lies at the meeting of Osage and Pond creeks, seven miles southwest of Medford. This is a historical profile, since available public records for this very small Grant County town offer few recent project reports.

The 1893 land opening preceded Jefferson’s post office name

OHS records the Cherokee Outlet opening to non-Indian settlement on September 16, 1893. A few months later, the Pond Creek post office was renamed Jefferson after a different government townsite had been selected as the county seat. A portable handwashing station station might serve an authorized local history event explaining how names and settlement boundaries shifted in early Grant County.

This chronology separates the land opening, railroad settlement, post office, and county-seat selection rather than compressing them into a single founding date. The source does not identify a current commemorative event in town.

Farmers once used Jefferson’s grain elevators and feed mill

Jefferson developed as an agricultural trade center along the railroad. OHS lists blacksmiths, hardware and harness shops, grain elevators, a feed mill, and a wheelwright among the businesses serving farmers. A portable restroom trailer could support a future authorized community program interpreting that rural trade network.

The historic inventory describes a service center for surrounding farms rather than an industrial city. Jefferson’s present scale is much smaller, so the detail is best used as historical context and not a claim about current businesses.

A brick school replaced Jefferson’s earlier frame school

After residents approved an initial bond for a wood-frame school, Jefferson voters supported another bond in 1918 to build a brick school, according to OHS. By that time the town also had the Taylor Hotel. A temporary shower-restroom trailer could serve an authorized renovation or community event around a school facility if one is being used locally.

The historical source establishes the 1918 construction but does not say the building survives or remains in educational use today. Present-day claims about a school should be based on current district information.

Jefferson once produced flour for regional trade

OHS says flour was Jefferson’s principal export in the 1930s, with coal and petroleum among the freight coming into town. The Jefferson Milling Company and Medford Jefferson Water Works served residents during that period. If an authorized heritage display is organized, a portable handwashing station station could be useful for outdoor setup and visitor support.

The account ties local milling to rail shipment and water service, illustrating how a small Grant County town connected agriculture with regional commerce. Those companies are historical institutions and should not be presented as current operators.

A 1936 WPA park and monument recorded local history

The Oklahoma SHPO’s historic survey notes Jefferson’s WPA-era park and monument project in 1936. It also records a historical society plan to renovate the park site, a detail that captures local interest in preserving civic memory. A portable restroom trailer could fit a future authorized volunteer cleanup or public-history gathering at an outdoor site.

The survey is an older inventory, so its renovation reference is not evidence of present-day construction. It establishes the park and monument as documented local history and keeps the renovation status appropriately qualified.

Two churches and two banks were organized by 1909

By 1909, Jefferson had Methodist and Presbyterian churches and two banks, according to the Oklahoma Historical Society. Their presence reflects how the agricultural trade center developed civic and financial institutions alongside stores and grain businesses. A portable shower trailer could support authorized crews at a future historic-site cleanup if outdoor work is organized.

The churches and banks are historical details; the cited entry does not confirm which original buildings remain. Reading them with the railroad and school accounts gives a fuller picture of the institutions that supported early Jefferson.

Jefferson’s grain trade grew around its rail station

The railroad chose Jefferson in part because a station could access water, then farmers used the line to move goods from the town’s elevators and feed mill. The railroad helped turn Pond Creek into an agricultural service center. A contractor sleeper trailer could support an authorized rail or utility work crew on a future project, while the article’s focus remains the documented history.

The railway connection began in 1889–90; current Jefferson sits on US 81, also known as the Chisholm Trail Highway. The contrast describes a shift in transportation context rather than suggesting that trains still serve the town.

Jefferson’s population was once more than 300

OHS records a population of 300 in 1900 and a peak of 322 in 1920. The town later declined to 12 residents in 2010, with the 2020 census reporting 11. These figures help explain why municipal-scale projects can be rare in Jefferson and why regional records must be labeled carefully. A portable restroom trailer might serve an occasional authorized public gathering or maintenance effort.

The figures are historical census counts, not a current estimate. The article uses them as scale context rather than implying that a large growth or redevelopment project is underway.

Jefferson Park appears in a state historic inventory

An Oklahoma SHPO inventory for north-central Oklahoma lists Jefferson Park and a monument associated with a Works Progress Administration project in 1936. The record places a federal-era public-works legacy in a town whose railroad and agricultural history shaped its earlier growth. A temporary shower-restroom trailer could be useful at an authorized outdoor preservation day if site maintenance is planned.

The inventory reflects the period when it was assembled and does not confirm the park’s present condition or any current renovation. It remains a source-backed account of a public space that became part of Jefferson’s civic landscape.
