Hastings was first called Bayard

The community at the present Hastings site was initially called Bayard. When the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache Reservation opened in August 1901, George Andrews was already there selling groceries to people traveling to Fort Sill to register for homestead claims. A dugout built by J. A. Marley became the first residence later that year.
