Gotebo began as Harrison during the 1901 land opening

Harrison was settled in August 1901 during the opening of the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache Reservation. The townsite adjoined a Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific depot that railroad officials had built a few months earlier. A future heritage event could use a portable restroom trailer near its gathering site.

Railroad officials named their station for Chief Gotebo

The station name honored a local Kiowa leader, Kau-Tau-Bone, known as Chief Gotebo. Harrison’s post office adopted the station’s name in 1904, and the town incorporated soon afterward. A future local-history exhibit could include a portable restroom trailer at its venue while keeping the chief’s story central.

Chief Gotebo was among the early Kiowa converts at Rainy Mountain

OHS records that Chief Gotebo was one of the first Kiowa baptized at Rainy Mountain Church. He is buried at Rainy Mountain Indian Cemetery, between Gotebo and Mountain View. Both sites are regional places, not features inside town limits. A future cultural-history program in town could use a portable restroom trailer at an approved venue.

Postal records show when Harrison became Gotebo

The Harrison Gazette’s 1904 issues preserve the town’s earlier name, while OHS’s postal history dates the post-office change to Gotebo to 1904. The shift followed the railroad station’s naming and preceded the town’s long run under its present name. A future newspaper-history exhibit could use a portable restroom trailer for visitors.

Ranching and wheat and cotton farming served the Gotebo area

Cattle ranching and farming have been the principal rural livelihoods around Gotebo, with cotton and wheat as leading crops, according to OHS. The town’s surrounding service area extended beyond its residents. A future agricultural demonstration could include a portable handwashing station station near the food or equipment area.

The Harrison Gazette documented Gotebo before the name changed

The Gateway archive preserves an August 26, 1904 issue of the Harrison Gazette, a weekly newspaper published in the town now called Gotebo. A separate Gotebo Gazette issue from 1910 shows the later town name in print. The archival contrast offers a concrete display idea; organizers could serve visitors with a portable restroom trailer at the venue.

Gotebo’s school closed in 1990 and students transferred

The local school closed in 1990, and students transferred to Mountain View. OHS counted 307 students in the Mountain View–Gotebo School District in 2000. A state historic-preservation survey separately lists Gotebo, formerly Harrison, among Kiowa County school sites. A future alumni gathering could use a portable restroom trailer at its approved venue.

The Gotebo Get Down began as a parade and homecoming

The Gotebo Get Down started in 1996 as a parade and celebration, giving local residents and former residents a reason to gather. OHS estimates about 2,500 people attended the first event. For a future event, planners should confirm current arrangements and attendance before choosing a portable restroom trailer.

Project planning questions

Gotebo workforce facility FAQs.

Can you help plan a man camp near Gotebo?

Share the project address, workforce count, schedule, and the services your crew needs. EZE Trailer Rentals will review sleeper and supporting facility options for the location.

Which supporting facilities can be planned?

The focus is sleeper accommodation with supporting shower, restroom or bathroom, and laundry facilities. The mix depends on your workforce and site requirements.

Can the facilities be coordinated as one site plan?

Yes. Share how the units need to work together, along with placement, utility, delivery access, and servicing requirements. Final configuration and availability are confirmed for the project.

What information helps plan a project in Kiowa County?

A project address, crew size, rooming needs, dates, access and placement details, available utilities, and the supporting services you want to include.

Gotebo’s population moved from 740 in 1910 to 168 in 2020

OHS records 740 residents in 1910, a peak of 827 in 1930, and 168 in the April 2020 census. The numbers trace the long change in a small Kiowa County town. They do not predict the size of a reunion or parade; organizers would estimate guests directly before selecting a temporary shower-restroom trailer.

A 1910 Gotebo Gazette issue preserves a snapshot of town life

The Gateway to Oklahoma History preserves a September 30, 1910 issue of the Gotebo Gazette, giving readers a dated primary source from the town. The OHS town account also documents the town’s expanding newspaper titles over time. A future archival program could keep visitors comfortable with a portable restroom trailer at its public venue.

A state survey lists the Gotebo school among county school sites

An Oklahoma Historical Society survey of rural schools in southwest Oklahoma lists Gotebo, originally Harrison, among Kiowa County school locations. The entry is a research index rather than a claim that the building is open or occupied now. A future preservation survey team could use a contractor sleeper trailer at an approved field base.

Gotebo’s working residents commuted to nearby towns

OHS notes that residents who worked outside Gotebo commuted primarily to Hobart or Mountain View, while most town residents were retired at the time of the account. That pattern places the town within a broader regional work network. A future authorized rural project crew could use a contractor sleeper trailer at its designated base.
