Geronimo was named for an Apache leader at Fort Sill

The town’s name refers to the Chiricahua Apache leader Geronimo, who was incarcerated at nearby Fort Sill. Geronimo was platted in 1902, before a post office opened in 1903. The name connects the town’s founding to a much wider history of Indigenous imprisonment. A future local-history program could use a portable restroom trailer at its venue.

Geronimo’s post office opened in March 1903

The new town received a post office in March 1903, one year after it was platted. That administrative milestone followed the railroad’s completion through the area and the competition over a depot. For a future archival display about settlement, organizers could place a portable restroom trailer near the exhibit space.

Geronimo secured a depot after competing with Junction City

Geronimo and nearby Junction City competed for the railway depot on the Enid and Anadarko line. Geronimo secured the facility, helping its businesses form quickly. The railroad from Lawton to Waurika was completed in 1902. A future approved rail-maintenance crew could use a contractor sleeper trailer for remote accommodation.

A bank, paper, lumberyards, and shops followed the depot

After the depot arrived, Geronimo quickly supported a bank, newspaper, hardware stores, lumberyards, and a doctor. The early commercial roster reflects the town’s role in an agricultural area rather than a rail stop alone. A future downtown heritage walk could plan a portable restroom trailer at its starting point.

Geronimo needed a cotton gin by 1905

Agriculture shaped Geronimo’s early economy, and the community needed a cotton gin by 1905. By the 1930s it had two gins, along with the Prairie Pipe Line Company. Those changes trace the shift from farm processing to a mixed agricultural and pipeline economy. A future farm demonstration could use a portable handwashing station station.

The Geronimo Advocate published from at least 1906 to 1912

The Geronimo Advocate was the only newspaper in the town’s history, and OHS records it publishing at least between 1906 and 1912. It offers a narrow window into local life during Geronimo’s early years. A future newspaper exhibit could use a portable restroom trailer near its venue while keeping original issues protected indoors.

Geronimo fell from 186 residents to 103 by 1950

Eight years after its founding, Geronimo had 186 residents. The town’s population then declined, reaching 103 in 1950 before later growth began. The figures frame a long change rather than a one-year shock. If a future alumni gathering brings former residents together, a portable restroom trailer could serve the actual event site.

Geronimo grew rapidly as Lawton expanded nearby

Geronimo’s population jumped to 199 in 1960 and 587 in 1970, as the town began attracting residents who worked in Lawton. OHS describes the shift as a new phase tied to its proximity to the city. For a future neighborhood event, organizers could consider a temporary shower-restroom trailer if available facilities do not meet needs.

Yes. Share how the units need to work together, along with placement, utility, delivery access, and servicing requirements. Final configuration and availability are confirmed for the project.

What information helps plan a project in Comanche County?

A project address, crew size, rooming needs, dates, access and placement details, available utilities, and the supporting services you want to include.

Geronimo had 1,159 residents in April 2020

The 2020 census counted 1,159 people in Geronimo, following decades of suburban growth after the 1960s. OHS’s historical account described the town as a bedroom community for Lawton and noted it lacked a local newspaper at the turn of the century. A future town gathering could use a portable restroom trailer if the chosen venue needs temporary facilities.

Pipeline and cotton businesses shared Geronimo in the 1930s

By the 1930s Geronimo had two cotton gins and the Prairie Pipe Line Company. The combination reflects two kinds of work in the town’s economy: crop processing and oil transport. A future authorized rural infrastructure crew could use a contractor sleeper trailer at its base, while the historic businesses remain part of the town’s past.
