The town of Supply received its first post office in 1903

James P. Gandy, a territorial legislator, named the settlement Supply for the military post about a mile east. Its first post office opened on May 12, 1903; the name changed to Fort Supply in 1943. A future town-history event could use a history event restroom trailer at a public site while distinguishing town and post histories.

James Gandy platted Fort Supply after buying ranch land

Rancher H. H. Halsell sold land to James Gandy, who had it platted as a townsite in 1903. Most original Supply buildings were moved from the failed Fitzgerald townsite, established two miles southwest in 1902. The town’s first built environment therefore reused a nearby settlement’s structures. An outdoor heritage event could use a heritage event restroom trailer at its gathering point.

Supply served farmers and ranchers in its early years

In its early years, Supply was the economic center for nearby farmers and ranchers. The town’s role rested on its location in the northwestern corner of Woodward County, thirteen miles from the county seat. For a future agricultural equipment project, a agricultural project restroom trailer could support a crew at a confirmed staging site without interrupting deliveries.

The old military post became Oklahoma’s first state hospital in 1908

The former military post east of town became Western Oklahoma Hospital in 1908, the state’s first publicly operated mental institution. The hospital reused the post grounds rather than the town’s commercial center. A future construction crew on a nearby public property could use a public project restroom trailer at a separately approved base.

A 1936 federal act provided for Fort Supply Dam

The Flood Control Act of 1936 provided for a dam and reservoir on Wolf Creek, about a mile southeast of town. Construction began in October 1938 and ended in May 1942; OHS says the earthen dam was then the largest in the United States. That project is regional infrastructure. A future maintenance crew could use a dam maintenance restroom trailer at an approved work site.

Fort Supply Lake added a recreation area to the town’s setting

Fort Supply Lake and its adjacent wildlife and recreation area are administered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The lake followed the 1938–42 dam project and became a regional feature near town. If a future park improvement or event is approved, a visitor restroom trailer could support visitors at a permitted site.

Fort Supply’s population fell to 230 by 1930

The town had 783 residents at statehood, but the 1930 count was 230. The population then fluctuated, reaching 559 in 1980 and 320 in April 2020. OHS records these changes alongside the area’s agricultural and institutional employers. A present-day project should plan any project restroom trailer around an actual crew count, not an old census.

A town and a nearby post shared the Fort Supply name after 1943

On May 1, 1943, the post-office name and town name changed from Supply to Fort Supply. The name originally referred to the frontier post east of the townsite, which had closed decades earlier. That distinction remains useful in telling the area’s story. A guided history stop could use a tour restroom trailer at an accessible visitor base.

Nearby state and correctional facilities shaped Fort Supply employment

By the end of the twentieth century, Fort Supply’s economic base included agriculture and jobs at Western State Psychiatric Center and William S. Key Correctional Center on the old post grounds. This town history describes the employment landscape at that time, not the facilities’ present status. A future public works crew might use a public works restroom trailer at its own approved site.

Fort Supply had 783 residents at statehood but only 320 in 2020

Census counts show the town declining from 783 residents in 1907 to 320 in April 2020, with local highs and lows in between. A post office, farm trade and employment on the nearby historic post grounds each marked different eras in the town’s development. For an event today, a event restroom trailer should fit expected use rather than the statehood population.
