Choctaw families shaped the Fort Coffee community after 1832

The community’s roots trace to 1832, when the federal government removed the Choctaw Nation to Indian Territory south of the Arkansas and South Canadian rivers. Choctaw families made the area between the Arkansas River and Skullyville home. A future cultural-history gathering could use a community event restroom trailer at a site selected with the community.

Fort Coffee was built to curb illegal liquor traffic in 1834

In 1834, Choctaw leaders asked the U.S. War Department for a fort to stop illegal whiskey and other contraband arriving by river from Arkansas. Fort Coffee was built on Swallow Rock above the Arkansas River and named for General John Coffee. A history walk near the river could plan a heritage event restroom trailer for visitors at an approved base.

Fort Coffee’s garrison built roads toward three military posts

The fort operated for only four years, but its garrison stopped most of the illegal whiskey flow and built roads connecting Fort Smith with Fort Towson and Fort Gibson. Those routes became foundations for later stage and mail roads. During a future corridor preservation project, a road crew restroom trailer could support the crew at a separate staging site.

The abandoned fort became a Choctaw boys’ academy in 1843

After the army left in 1838, the Choctaw Nation allowed the Methodist Episcopal Mission to establish the Fort Coffee Choctaw Boys Academy in the old fort buildings in 1843. The site shifted from military use to education. A future school-history exhibit could use a school history event restroom trailer for visitors without suggesting the original academy buildings remain intact.

The Fort Coffee academy closed during the Civil War

The Choctaw Boys Academy educated students until the Civil War, when the school closed and Confederate Choctaw troops occupied the buildings. In October 1863, Union soldiers captured and burned them. The sequence marks a sharp end to the educational use of the former fort. A future memorial program could use a memorial event restroom trailer at a separate event site.

Fort Coffee became home to Choctaw Freedmen after the Civil War

After the Civil War, Choctaw families farmed the Fort Coffee area. Under the Reconstruction Treaty of 1866, the Choctaw were required to release enslaved people; the freedpeople who remained either worked for Choctaw families or farmed independently. OHS notes that later allotments placed much Freedmen land near present Fort Coffee. A community-history event could use a community event restroom trailer for visitors.

Cotton moved from Fort Coffee’s river bottoms to outside markets

Cotton was the area’s early dominant crop, and Fort Coffee operated a cotton gin. Riverboats and later railroads carried cotton to markets; shipping points included Spiro and other Le Flore County towns. The town’s trade geography followed both waterways and rail lines. A future agricultural project could use a agricultural project restroom trailer at an approved work base.

Railroads and natural gas added to Fort Coffee’s economic geography

Beyond farming, Fort Coffee sat within the region’s natural-gas fields and had rail links through the Fort Smith and Western and Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf railways. OHS describes residents commuting to Fort Smith for industrial jobs by the end of the twentieth century. A future pipeline crew base might use utility crew restroom trailer if a project is confirmed and a suitable location approved.

Project planning questions

Fort Coffee workforce facility FAQs.

Can you help plan a man camp near Fort Coffee?

Share the project address, workforce count, schedule, and the services your crew needs. EZE Trailer Rentals will review sleeper and supporting facility options for the location.

Which supporting facilities can be planned?

The focus is sleeper accommodation with supporting shower, restroom or bathroom, and laundry facilities. The mix depends on your workforce and site requirements.

Can the facilities be coordinated as one site plan?

Yes. Share how the units need to work together, along with placement, utility, delivery access, and servicing requirements. Final configuration and availability are confirmed for the project.

What information helps plan a project in Le Flore County?

A project address, crew size, rooming needs, dates, access and placement details, available utilities, and the supporting services you want to include.

Fort Coffee organized a volunteer fire department in the 1990s

The Fort Coffee Volunteer Fire Department began in the 1990s. It is one of the community facilities that grew alongside a senior-citizen and Head Start building constructed in the 1970s. If a future volunteer training day uses outdoor space, a training event restroom trailer could support participants while keeping emergency access clear.

Fort Coffee incorporated as a town in 1998

The community incorporated in 1998 and built a city hall, although its history stretched back more than a century and a half. OHS describes Fort Coffee as both one of Oklahoma’s oldest communities and one of its newest incorporated towns. For a future civic open house, a civic event restroom trailer could serve visitors outside the municipal building.

The 2020 census counted 336 residents in Fort Coffee

Fort Coffee’s population was 412 in 2000, 424 in 2010 and 336 in April 2020. OHS also notes that more than a thousand people in the surrounding rural area considered Fort Coffee their hometown in 2000, so municipal population alone did not capture its wider community ties. A gathering could size a community event restroom trailer to expected attendance.
