East Duke’s businesses found temporary quarters after the 1910 fire

Temporary space is part of East Duke’s own history. The town’s published account of its early years describes a 1910 fire that burned businesses including Darby Brothers, the post office inside the store and McCauley’s Hotel. A. L. Perry and other local supporters provided quarters for displaced businesses while replacements were built.

For a comparable rebuilding project today, restroom trailers could accompany temporary commercial space when the new location lacks usable bathrooms. That support would follow the businesses and contractors actually occupying the site, with servicing arranged for the period between demolition and reopening. The town history’s most useful detail is the response: local activity continued in substitute premises while the permanent buildings caught up.

Duke began with a store and a post-office application in 1890

A. L. Perry founded the community in 1890, opened a general store and applied for a post office. The charter was granted on September 11; the post office took the name Duke after Judge F. B. Duke of Mangum. The town would later be known as East Duke after a dispute over its railroad location split residents between New and Old Town. If a historical survey revisited the early commercial site, portable restroom trailers could support a small field crew for the day.

A 1906 town plat followed Duke’s earlier post office

Duke was platted in 1906, six years after A. L. Perry’s post-office application and nearly two decades before the railroad dispute was finally resolved. By 1909–10 the Oklahoma Historical Society describes the settlement as a thriving farm trade center with about 350 residents, churches, a bank, grist mill, cotton gin and newspaper. A present-day agricultural maintenance crew could use portable handwashing stations if a rural site needed temporary wash facilities, but the account describes the historic town, not a current project.

A railroad’s midpoint location deepened the split between Duke’s two towns

The Altus, Wichita Falls and Hollis Railway located between New Town and Old Town in 1910. The communities had already developed separately, with their schools only about four hundred yards apart; the rail decision made the division harder to ignore. A modern track or road crew working near settled blocks would need to keep temporary access well away from homes, and portable restroom trailers could be positioned accordingly after a site review. The historic source does not describe a present railway project.

A horse-drawn hearse carried the hatchet buried between Duke’s towns

In 1915 representatives of New Town and Old Town marked their union with a ceremony: they literally buried a hatchet delivered in a horse-drawn hearse. New Town offered free lots and moving costs to people willing to relocate, and Old Town eventually disappeared. For a future heritage gathering built around that history, combined shower and restroom trailers could be added to the event plan as a practical support service, with placement chosen to protect the historic setting.

East Duke’s name distinguishes it from the vanished West Duke

The Oklahoma Historical Society describes today’s Duke, also known as East Duke, as New Town after the 1915 reunion. The rival Old Town became West Duke, but it no longer exists. That distinction matters when reading early records: a school, station or business listed in one settlement may not have stood in the surviving town. A researcher spending a day comparing plats and newspaper references could consider sleeper trailers for a temporary base, while confirming each site against the actual historical map.

A decade of violence prompted Duke residents to strengthen law enforcement

Between 1926 and 1936, the OHS town history counts ten gunfights and ten homicides in Duke. The entry says concerned residents responded by tightening law enforcement; it does not give a case-by-case account or identify a single cause. That narrow wording matters when telling a difficult local story. For a modern public-safety training day, portable restroom trailers could provide temporary restroom access for staff, but the historical record does not document such a present-day exercise.

A gypsum wallboard plant brought new employment west of Duke

Republic Gypsum bought local gypsum deposits in 1960 and built a wallboard plant west of town. The plant preceded a population increase recorded by the 1970 census, though the OHS account does not state that it alone caused the change. If industrial construction or maintenance were taking place in the area today, portable shower trailers could provide showers for crews staying near the job; this is a future-use example, not a claim about the historic plant’s current status.

Duke built an underground public school in 1965

A 1965 school building in Duke was designed underground, a response to the realities of severe-weather country and an unusual architectural choice for a rural district. The OHS account describes the facility’s heating and cooling systems as efficient and calls it a modern public school at the time of its entry. During a hypothetical renovation of an occupied school, combined shower and restroom trailers could support contractors without crossing student routes or blocking entrances.

East Duke’s 2026 water notice distinguishes two supply systems

An official notice dated September 17, 2026 sets out water-use stages for East Duke’s municipal system and separately for Centralvue, including different supply descriptions. The distinction is useful to any crew arranging temporary facilities: a project manager would need to confirm which system serves the exact site before relying on a water connection. portable shower trailers may be an option where a self-contained temporary setup is more suitable, subject to the supplier’s specifications and site plan.
