Cromwell grew around a well before it had a post office

The Bruner Number One well drew a town around it with remarkable speed. Joe I. Cromwell platted land nearby in 1923; the Oklahoma Historical Society describes thousands of people arriving within weeks. A post office followed in May 1924.

For a modern field assignment, arranging temporary man camp facilities before the workforce arrives can address the same basic planning question: where people will sleep, wash and handle their laundry while the job lasts. The number staying overnight and the services available at the approved property should determine the camp layout.

Cromwell’s history also records how temporary that early growth proved. After a business-district fire and a declining oil boom, only a smaller group of businesses and churches was rebuilt. A project camp likewise needs to fit an assignment’s duration, with a clear plan for removal when the work ends.

Seventy-year-old Bill Tilghman became town marshal

Cromwell asked retired lawman William “Bill” Tilghman to establish order when the town’s population surged. A future history program about local law enforcement could plan a shower and restroom combination trailer for attendees at an outdoor venue. He was about seventy years old when he accepted the marshal role, the Oklahoma Historical Society records.

Bill Tilghman was killed in Cromwell in 1924

Tilghman’s work in Cromwell ended in violence: he was shot and killed on November 1, 1924, while serving as town marshal. A future educational gathering could consider a portable restroom trailer for visitors, with the story presented as the killing of a public officer rather than outlaw entertainment. The Oklahoma Historical Society identifies the event as a major part of the town’s history.

An enforcement drive closed about seventy businesses

During the 1920s, around 150 businesses operated in Cromwell, many selling illegal whiskey or narcotics; an enforcement drive permanently closed about seventy. If a future historical exhibit needed temporary facilities, a portable restroom trailer could serve the site without glamorizing the crime described. The Oklahoma Historical Society records this as part of the town’s difficult public-safety history.

A December 1924 fire destroyed most of downtown

A major fire swept through Cromwell’s business district in December 1924, destroying almost all of it. If a future preservation crew worked on the surviving historic fabric, a portable shower trailer could be evaluated for workers after site access was confirmed. The State Historic Preservation Office’s oil-era survey describes the town’s lack of a water supply and fire protection at the time.

The boom forced room for 350 students within four months

Before the oil boom, one rural schoolroom served the area. A future school restoration crew could assess a portable restroom trailer for a temporary work area. Within four months of Cromwell’s rapid growth, provision had to be made for 350 students; petroleum companies later funded a new high school completed in 1927. The Oklahoma Historical Society’s preservation survey records how quickly public infrastructure had to catch up.

Cromwell’s oil boom arrived before basic utilities

Cromwell grew so quickly that, during the early boom, the town had no water source, sewer system, fire protection, or jail. The Oklahoma Historical Society’s preservation survey says water had to be brought in by wagon. A future remote project crew could review a shower and restroom combination trailer only after confirming usable utilities and servicing. That record is a reminder of the civic strain created by sudden growth.

Project planning questions

Cromwell workforce facility FAQs.

Can you help plan a man camp near Cromwell?

Send us the address, dates, and number of people staying. Tell us who will share sleeping space and which portable shower, bathroom, and laundry facilities you need. We'll discuss the available layouts with you.

Can I ask for a portable bathroom or shower on its own?

Tell us which facility you need and what is already available at the property. We can review a portable restroom trailer, mobile shower, or combined unit for the job.

How do I choose a portable sleeper layout?

Start with the rooming arrangements. A crew sharing bunk space has different needs from staff who need separate rooms. The model pages show photos and published details to help you compare.

What should I send before discussing delivery?

The address, preferred dates, crew size, and a description of the entrance and available space are useful. Include what you know about power, water, and wastewater connections so we can talk through placement.

Cromwell’s census population fell after the oil boom

The Oklahoma Historical Society records 249 residents in Cromwell in 1930 and 451 in 1940; the 2020 Census counted 238. The boom’s extraordinary early crowd was not a permanent population. These later counts give a more grounded picture of the town’s long-term scale than peak estimates for the surrounding oil field. A future community event could plan a portable restroom trailer around its actual expected attendance.

Oilman Joe I. Cromwell gave the town its name

Muskogee oilman Joe I. Cromwell bought land near the Bruner Number One well and platted the town in 1923. The Oklahoma Historical Society identifies him as the namesake, linking Cromwell’s name directly to the petroleum boom. If a future walking tour explained the town’s origins, a shower and restroom combination trailer could provide a temporary facility for visitors at a permitted stop.
