A grocery-store fire gave Coalgate another reason to build

When Coalgate’s grocery store burned on July 7, 2016, residents lost their local place to buy food. Keeping stock cold would be one part of planning for a similar interruption today: a refrigeration trailer could hold food transferred safely from usable storage, with suitable power at the receiving site. Replacing the shop would still take much longer.

The Choctaw Nation’s January 2019 Biskinik recalled that residents had driven to Ada or Atoka during the year and a half the store took to rebuild. The Nation broke ground for a Country Market on December 10, 2018, with plans for fresh produce, a butcher shop, a deli and a bakery at 1102 South Broadway. More local choice had a practical value after that experience.

Coalgate began as a mining camp in 1889

Before it was a county seat, Coalgate was a coal camp. The Oklahoma Historical Society dates the community’s start to 1889 and records the first coal shipment on April 17 that year. A future heritage program about the mining period could use a portable restroom trailer for visitors, while keeping the historical record separate from any modern event.

That shipment connected a new settlement to an industry that would shape Coal County for decades.

Eight mines were shipping coal by 1899

By 1899, eight Coalgate mines sent an average of 28 rail cars of coal each day, according to the Oklahoma Historical Society. The figure captures a concentrated industrial economy, not a present-day production estimate. If a future preservation crew worked on mining-era structures, a contractor sleeper trailer could support an overnight stay near the job after access and site needs were reviewed.

Liddle became Coalgate in January 1890

The town first went by Liddle. A future interpretive walk could plan a shower and restroom combination trailer for visitor access where the route allows. On January 23, 1890, its name changed to Coalgate, a label the Oklahoma Historical Society describes as likely referring to coal moving through the rail-and-mine gateway. The entry also records a separate naming legend, so the “coal gate” explanation should be treated as probable rather than certain.

Coalgate incorporated in 1898

Coal production brought people and commerce; municipal incorporation followed in 1898. That milestone appears in the Oklahoma Historical Society’s Coalgate history alongside the town’s growth from mining camp to civic center. A local organization planning a new history exhibit might consider a portable restroom trailer if it stages an outdoor opening, but no such event is implied by the historical record.

Labor conflict helped close Coalgate’s mines

Coal County’s mines had started closing by the early 1920s as union strikes disrupted production. For a future oral-history project involving former mine sites, a mobile laundry trailer could be considered for a crew staying through multiple recording days. The Oklahoma Historical Society places that labor conflict among several pressures on the local economy, alongside the boll weevil’s damage to cotton and bank failures.

WPA crews built a high-school gym in 1939

A Works Progress Administration project added a high-school gym in Coalgate in 1939; the Oklahoma Historical Society notes that the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Should preservation work ever be organized around the building, a contractor sleeper trailer could be discussed for a visiting crew after site access and availability were confirmed. The project is a documented piece of local public construction.

Project planning questions

Coalgate workforce facility FAQs.

Can you help plan a man camp near Coalgate?

Send us the address, dates, and number of people staying. Tell us who will share sleeping space and which portable shower, bathroom, and laundry facilities you need. We'll discuss the available layouts with you.

Can I ask for a portable bathroom or shower on its own?

Tell us which facility you need and what is already available at the property. We can review a portable restroom trailer, mobile shower, or combined unit for the job.

How do I choose a portable sleeper layout?

Start with the rooming arrangements. A crew sharing bunk space has different needs from staff who need separate rooms. The model pages show photos and published details to help you compare.

What should I send before discussing delivery?

The address, preferred dates, crew size, and a description of the entrance and available space are useful. Include what you know about power, water, and wastewater connections so we can talk through placement.

A hospital joined Coalgate’s post-mining economy

Coalgate’s economy did not end with the mines. During any future renovation at an occupied facility, a portable restroom trailer might help keep temporary site access available while work zones are active. The Oklahoma Historical Society records a hospital opening in 1952, followed by a clothing factory in 1957 and a housing authority in 1965. Those dates sketch a town adapting its services and employment base.

A federal post office was completed in the 1940s

Coalgate’s federal post office was approved in 1937 and completed in the early 1940s, according to the Oklahoma Historical Society. The gap between approval and construction gives the civic building its own timeline within the town’s recovery from the coal downturn. If a future archival or preservation crew worked at the property, a portable shower trailer could be planned for staff staying nearby, subject to the site’s utilities and access.
