Fish moved first; Canton Dam's inspection came later

An inspection at Canton Dam in July 2026 began with pumps and fish rescue. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports that crews started lowering the stilling basin on July 3, using two pumps to expose concrete normally hidden underwater. Wildlife staff helped move the remaining fish upstream before the basin could be emptied.

Then came the sediment. Crews used heavy equipment to gather years of silt and sludge, loading it into trucks before engineers could inspect the concrete. For another maintenance assignment with similarly dirty work, temporary shower facilities could give personnel a place to wash at the support area after their shift.

The inspection itself was preventive. Engineers checked for cracks, worn concrete, exposed reinforcement, and hollow areas beneath the slab; the project lead reported no major concern. The work made an ordinarily submerged part of the dam accessible long enough to examine it.

Canton sprang up around an August 1905 town-lot sale

The Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway crossed the North Canadian River in 1905, and the Union Real Estate and Townsite Company held a Canton lot sale on August 5. The town grew quickly around that moment. For a future downtown street project, 14-foot restroom trailer could keep workers' bathroom access separate from the public route.

Canton borrowed its name from the nearby Cantonment

The name Canton refers to Cantonment, the military post established nearby in 1879. The post itself stood outside the town and had a short life; the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers notes that its buildings were later used by Mennonite missionaries and that the Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes restored a remaining building. If preservation work were planned there, portable handwashing station could serve staff at an approved exterior base.

Canton’s first church opened in 1906

The Methodist Episcopal church, built in 1906, was Canton's first church according to the OHS record. It joined a new town whose first years were organized around the railway and farm trade. If a future church repair or community gathering temporarily limits indoor access, 12-foot restroom trailer could be planned near the work area with the congregation's approval.

Canton replaced its wood-frame school with brick in 1910–11

A small wood-frame building first served as Canton's school. In 1910–11, the town built a two-story brick school, a substantial change in its public facilities. For any future school construction phase, shower and restroom combination trailer could support workers at an approved staging area away from students and staff.

The North Canadian River flood of October 1923 pushed Canton toward flood control

The North Canadian River overflowed in October 1923 in one of Canton's worst recorded floods. Residents began pressing for flood control afterward, and Congress authorized the Canton Lake project in 1938. At a future flood-recovery site, portable handwashing station could support authorized field crews once officials approve a safe location and service plan.

Canton Lake construction paused for the war and resumed afterward

The Corps began work on Canton Dam in 1940, paused construction during World War II, then completed the project in 1948 and dedicated it in May 1949. The long timeline matters: the dam was a federal flood-control project that also became a regional water and recreation resource. A future contractor base on a separate project could use office, sleeper, shower and restroom trailer to plan sleeping and washing together.

The Walleye Rodeo turned Canton Lake fishing into a civic event

Canton's Chamber of Commerce inaugurated the Walleye Rodeo in the late 1960s, helping establish the lake's reputation for walleye fishing. The derby connected the town's identity to the nearby federal reservoir. If event organizers need facilities beyond what the venue already provides, 14-foot restroom trailer can be considered near registration or food service after access and environmental constraints are checked.

Project planning questions

Canton workforce facility FAQs.

Can you help plan a man camp near Canton?

Send us the address, dates, and number of people staying. Tell us who will share sleeping space and which portable shower, bathroom, and laundry facilities you need. We'll discuss the available layouts with you.

Can I ask for a portable bathroom or shower on its own?

Tell us which facility you need and what is already available at the property. We can review a portable restroom trailer, mobile shower, or combined unit for the job.

How do I choose a portable sleeper layout?

Start with the rooming arrangements. A crew sharing bunk space has different needs from staff who need separate rooms. The model pages show photos and published details to help you compare.

What should I send before discussing delivery?

The address, preferred dates, crew size, and a description of the entrance and available space are useful. Include what you know about power, water, and wastewater connections so we can talk through placement.

Canton’s city park hosted baseball and band concerts

The city park provided a place for baseball games and band concerts during Canton's early growth. The OHS account records both activities as part of ordinary community life, not merely a backdrop to the town's business history. For a future park improvement or special event, portable handwashing station could support workers or guests if existing restrooms are not adequate for the approved plan.

A 2011 tornado destroyed 77 campsites at Canton Lake

An EF3 tornado struck Canton Lake's Canadian A campground on May 24, 2011, destroying 77 campsites along with shower and restroom buildings, loop roads, a playground, and part of a day-use area. The Corps rebuilt the sites and reopened the campground in March 2015. Temporary 14-foot restroom trailer may be useful for crews on a future, authorized repair project, with placement kept outside reopened visitor areas.
