A Presbyterian mission school operated at Mayhew in 1839

About two miles north of present-day Boswell, Choctaw residents established Mayhew after removal to Indian Territory. A history program about Mayhew can take visitors to rural sites. A restroom trailer provides facilities at a designated gathering point without disturbing the historic location.

Presbyterians set up a church and mission school there in 1839, before the railroad shifted the area’s town center south.

A trading post opened at Mayhew in 1842 beside an important road junction

Mayhew stood on a road between Fort Towson and Boggy Depot and between Fort Towson and Fort Washita. Charles F. Stewart opened a trading post there in 1842, turning the crossroads into a regional stop.

The route history can anchor a Choctaw-era walking tour. A mobile handwashing station can serve guides and visitors at a temporary stop away from the old road corridor.

The Mayhew post office opened in 1845

The U.S. Postal Service designated a Mayhew post office in 1845. A postal-history event can use reproduced maps and correspondence. A mobile handwashing station helps organizers handle a day-long program in an outdoor venue while protecting paper records.

Although it did not operate continuously throughout the nineteenth century, the office marked the area’s early role as a Choctaw Nation civic center.

The railroad moved Mayhew’s businesses south to form Boswell

In 1902, the Arkansas and Choctaw Railway laid tracks through the area. Mayhew’s businesses and residents moved south toward the rails, and the new town took the name Boswell from the railroad right-of-way surveyor.

Railside utility work still depends on coordinating crews with operating access. A shower and restroom trailer can support a short-term work compound once the site boundary is approved.

Boswell incorporated in 1903 as the new rail town grew

Boswell incorporated through the Central District Court of Indian Territory in 1903, one year after the railroad brought the townsite south from Mayhew. A civic anniversary can bring former residents back to town. A restroom trailer offers extra visitor restroom capacity while the school and community buildings continue their regular use.

By statehood in 1907, the community counted 836 residents.

Three cotton gins operated in Boswell in 1932

Farming and ranching anchored Boswell’s economy, and three cotton gins operated in the town in 1932. Cotton, corn, and fruit were shipped through the railroad depot during the early decades.

A modern harvest crew may work outside town before dawn and after dark. A laundry trailer can provide laundry access for workers staying near a rural field assignment.

Boswell’s homecoming and old-settlers celebration began in 1937

Boswell started an annual homecoming and old-settlers celebration in 1937. A reunion can fill the civic calendar and bring visitors to outdoor venues. A shower and restroom trailer can give the event committee flexible restroom capacity when the permanent hall is already booked.

The gathering continued into the twenty-first century, connecting present residents with the town’s farming history and former neighbors.

Boswell used WPA funds to build a concrete jail in 1939

Boswell appropriated $693 in 1939 for a two-room concrete jail built with Works Progress Administration support. The structure survives at its original alley location, a small but tangible remnant of New Deal-era public works.

A preservation day around the jail should keep visitors off fragile masonry and leave the alley accessible. A restroom trailer can serve the volunteers and visitors at a nearby event base.

Dunjee School remained separate in Boswell until 1965

African American students attended the Dunjee Separate School in Boswell. After the 1954 Brown v. That history belongs in a carefully sourced local education exhibit. A restroom trailer can support a public program where the school story is discussed without using the former campus as an event facility.

Board decision, the school entered the Boswell district, but students did not attend with white students until Dunjee closed in 1965.

Boswell had two banks and a telephone connection by 1911

By 1911 Boswell had two banks, telephone service, a cotton gin, two hotels, and several retail outlets. Those services followed the railroad-era shift from Mayhew and supported the town’s early agricultural trade.

A present-day public-works project near the old commercial center may affect customer access. A restroom trailer can serve contractors while sidewalks and local businesses stay reachable.
