A 2024 tornado prompted damage assessment around Hollister

A large tornado was reported near Hollister late on April 30, 2024, and local authorities began assessing damage in Tillman County. KOCO described the storm as part of an active April outbreak and reported damage in the rural area around town. A portable restroom trailer could support an authorized volunteer base during a future cleanup operation.

The story was an initial assessment and does not establish that the town center was struck. Hollister is a small community in a rural county, so damage locations should be described precisely rather than generalized to every resident. The initial report began a damage assessment, so it should not be read as a final accounting of every affected property.

Flooding closed Highway 5 east of Hollister in April 2025

After severe weather in April 2025, Tillman County Emergency Management reported significant flooding on Highway 5 just east of Hollister, as well as on Highway 36 north of Grandfield. A portable handwashing station station might be useful at a future authorized road-recovery or public-safety site after conditions are safe.

The report locates the floodwater on a county highway east of town; it does not describe flooding throughout Hollister. County emergency coverage is relevant to local travel but should remain geographically specific. Highway 5 east of Hollister and Highway 36 north of Grandfield were distinct flood locations in the county report.

A storm-related power outage affected the wider county

Tillman County experienced power interruptions during the severe weather on April 30, 2025, according to KSWO. The report also documented flooding near Hollister. This is a county-level impact, not proof that every home in town lost electricity. A portable restroom trailer could serve a future authorized recovery staging site if local officials request temporary facilities.

The article links travel hazards and utility disruption to a regional weather event while keeping the scope clear. It does not assign an outage duration or a town-by-town customer count. The KSWO account did not provide a Hollister-specific outage count or a restoration time for individual customers.

Hollister began as a railway stop called Happy Jack

When the Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railway needed a depot in 1907, it established a townsite near Isadore and Parton. The place first went by “Happy Jack,” “Happy Spur,” or simply “Happy”; the first station was a boxcar, and the first train arrived November 16. A future railway-history program might use a portable restroom trailer at an approved venue.

The settlement took its lasting name from Harry L. Hollister, the depot agent in Frederick. That origin is distinct from the earlier nearby townsites, neither of which was the station’s final name. The boxcar stop was provisional; later the railway town took the name of a Frederick depot agent.

Eighteen buildings moved from Parton to Hollister

A Reeves steam engine moved 18 buildings from Parton into Hollister, while other structures were built of brick. Water for the new community came from Parton’s two wells. A future local-history gathering could use a temporary shower-restroom trailer while explaining the practical work of relocating homes and businesses to the railroad stop.

OHS describes a transfer of buildings and water source, not a wholesale evacuation of every Parton resident. The story makes the relationship between nearby settlements concrete while keeping the two places distinct. OHS describes the move of 18 buildings and use of Parton’s wells, but does not say all residents relocated together.

The post office opened after the first train arrived

Hollister’s first train arrived in November 1907; the town’s post office opened on February 1, 1909. Businesses and churches soon purchased lots. The Oklahoma Historical Society’s timeline shows how the depot settlement acquired civic and commercial services after rail service began. A future heritage day could use a portable restroom trailer at an authorized gathering site.

The order matters: rail access preceded the postal designation, while the new townsite grew from an earlier station. The source does not give a post-office closure date. Mail service followed the first train by about fifteen months, as businesses and churches began buying town lots.

A brick school opened as local districts consolidated

After rural students first attended Dawson School one mile west of Hollister’s northern boundary, local school districts consolidated and a brick building was constructed in 1922. The high school closed in 1963 and the grade school in 1968. An alumni reunion could use a portable restroom trailer at an approved venue while honoring the school’s role in community life.

OHS notes that the Hollister Alumni Association remained active and held well-attended reunions. It does not say the former school buildings remain open, so a reunion location should be confirmed separately. The 1922 schoolhouse followed rural Dawson School, and the alumni association remained active after the schools closed.

Hollister’s civic groups included farm clubs and a town band

For many years, Hollister supported civic clubs, fraternal organizations, youth and farm clubs, and a city band. Doctors, dentists, businesses, and five churches served the surrounding agricultural region. A future community reunion could use a temporary shower-restroom trailer for a full-day outdoor program bringing former residents back to town.

The historical account describes an earlier period of community activity, not a calendar of current organizations. It offers context for why alumni reunions remained important after the schools closed. Those groups served a surrounding farm region, which explains why the town’s civic life reached beyond its small census count.

Two grain elevators served farmers around the town

At the turn of the twenty-first century, OHS noted that two grain elevators served local farmers in the Hollister area. The town had once supported a wider mix of doctors, dentists, churches, and businesses, but its population had fallen to 60 around that period. A future agricultural event could use a portable handwashing station station for visitors handling samples or equipment.

The source describes the elevators as serving area farmers and does not provide their current status. It is therefore a historical snapshot of agricultural infrastructure, not a claim that both facilities remain active. The 1940 peak of 200 contrasts with 35 residents in 2020, though the source does not chart every intervening decade.

Hollister’s school and business district served a wider farm area

Hollister’s population was small, but the town’s services reached beyond its boundaries: five churches, health professionals, farm clubs, and grain elevators served the surrounding agricultural region. The historical record shows how a rural service center can matter to a much larger area than its census count suggests. A portable restroom trailer could be planned for a future public event based on attendance.

This regional role should not be used to imply that all farms or organizations were located within town limits. OHS describes services based in Hollister and the surrounding people who relied on them. The two elevators were noted around 2000; the cited history does not establish whether either still operates.
