A vehicle overturned during storms near Hammon in March 2026

KOCO reported an overturned vehicle near East 990 Road and 11th Street as storms moved through western Oklahoma on March 5, 2026. The article described crews clearing the scene; it did not establish that the vehicle overturned inside Hammon's town limits or give a confirmed weather cause. A future outdoor event should monitor weather and have a shelter plan; a portable restroom trailer provides no storm protection.

The location should therefore be treated as nearby rural context, not a town-center emergency.

Hammon grew beside Chief White Shield's allotment

After the 1887 Dawes Act, Cheyenne and Arapaho families received 160-acre allotments. OHS identifies the allotment of Chief White Shield beside the north side of present-day Hammon and notes that many Cheyenne lived there communally in White Shield Camp into the 1960s.

A future cultural-history event could use a portable restroom trailer if invited community hosts choose an outdoor venue. That history is central to understanding the town's cultural geography.

The Red Moon Agency operated near Hammon's future site

After the 1892 land opening, Indian Agent James H. Hammon was sent to the Red Moon Agency near the future town. He was assigned to build a reservation school and teach Cheyenne and Arapaho people farming. The agency was a subagency to the Cheyenne-Arapaho Agency at Darlington, placing Hammon's story within a wider network of federal administration and Native community life.

A future interpretive program could use a portable restroom trailer at its venue while presenting the agency's location accurately as nearby, not inside town.

Ida Hammon served as postmaster in 1894

A post office opened in the Hammons' home on June 30, 1894, with Ida M. Hammon serving as postmaster. That household office preceded the railroad-driven move of the community west in 1910. The record puts a woman in an official civic role at the town's beginning and shows that Hammon's postal history started before its present location was established.

A future local-history exhibit could use a portable restroom trailer at a public venue as visitors trace the move.

Hammon moved west to meet the railroad in 1910

The Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railroad laid track through the area in 1910. Rather than remain at its original location in Custer County, the community moved west into Roger Mills County to be near the line. If a future crew works on approved infrastructure along the corridor, a contractor sleeper trailer could support its temporary base.

That relocation shaped the town's present geography and shows how rail access could move an entire settlement, not just add a depot.

Hammon incorporated after a county board hearing in 1911

On May 22, 1911, the Roger Mills County commissioners accepted the Hammon election board's report requesting incorporation. The formal act followed the 1910 move to the railroad and made the relocated community a town in its new county.

A future public-history gathering could use a portable restroom trailer at an approved outdoor venue. This dated civic record adds another stage to Hammon's shift from agency-area settlement to incorporated place.

Hammon served ranching and farming communities

For roughly twenty-five to thirty years after incorporation, Hammon prospered as a trade center for surrounding ranchers and farmers. Drought in the 1930s and the Great Depression then hurt the local economy. OHS records that oil and gas production later joined farming and ranching as economic supports, reflecting a western Oklahoma economy shaped by land, weather, and resource development.

For a future agricultural demonstration, a portable handwashing station station could support food or equipment handling.

A 1934 flood killed 17 Hammon residents

In spring 1934, fourteen inches of rain fell in five hours and caused a flood that killed seventeen townspeople, according to OHS. The brief historical record documents the rainfall and loss but does not give a detailed flood map or rescue timeline. The tragedy remains separate from modern storm reports near Hammon and should not be used to imply a current flood risk without updated data.

A portable restroom trailer could serve a future memorial gathering at an approved site, but it has no role in emergency protection.

A project address, crew size, rooming needs, dates, access and placement details, available utilities, and the supporting services you want to include.

Hammon maintained its own K–12 school system

At the turn of the twenty-first century, Hammon maintained an independent kindergarten-through-grade-twelve school system alongside an ambulance service, volunteer fire department, senior center, and municipal government. The list captures the public institutions OHS documented at that time, not a guarantee about each service's current structure. A future school reunion or outdoor event could use a portable restroom trailer if the venue's existing facilities need support.

The school is one strand of the town's continuing civic history.

Hammon's 2000 census reflected its mixed history

Hammon counted 469 residents in 2000, and OHS says almost 40 percent were American Indian, most descendants of Peace Chief Black Kettle's band. The figure places community identity alongside the history of White Shield Camp and the Red Moon Agency.

A future cultural gathering could consider a temporary shower-restroom trailer if organizers need temporary facilities. It is a dated demographic snapshot, not a current population estimate or a substitute for local consultation.
