Granite received funding for about 500 new water meters

In May 2026, the Oklahoma Water Resources Board approved $483,343 for Granite's public water system, with full principal forgiveness. The plan funds about 500 meters with automated reading, giving operators real-time usage information and a better tool for finding leaks. If field crews need a temporary base during installation, a contractor sleeper trailer could be considered at an approved site.

The OWRB described a funded project, not a completed installation, so the upgrade should be treated as upcoming work.

New meters are intended to give Granite better leak data

Granite's planned meter replacement is about operational visibility as much as billing. Automated readings are expected to help utility staff spot leaks sooner, monitor the network, and spend less time reading meters manually.

A portable restroom trailer can support a future utility crew at a permitted work zone while the system upgrade moves through construction. The state board said the extra time could be redirected to maintenance and repairs; that is the project's intended benefit, not a measured outcome yet.

Rail service turned Granite into a regional supply point

K. C. Cox platted Granite in 1900, the year the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway reached the community. For a time, Granite was the rail line's terminus, so supplies for outlying places had to be shipped there and then carried overland. That transport role helped explain why the town grew quickly after rail service arrived.

If a future preservation crew surveys the old rail landscape, a contractor sleeper trailer could help house workers at an approved staging base.

The 1901 land opening brought trade to Granite

Visitors came to Granite to await the 1901 opening of the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache lands. OHS records hardware, lumber, dry-goods, grocery, meat, and bakery businesses serving them. The temporary influx stimulated the young town's commercial life, joining the railroad's role in bringing people and supplies to the area.

A future heritage weekend could use a portable restroom trailer near an approved outdoor exhibit, with visitor numbers based on the event plan.

Four firms quarried red granite near Granite by 1909

By 1909, at least four companies were quarrying red granite from Headquarters Mountain, helping establish the monument industry associated with the town. Granite's name itself reflects the nearby stone. A future quarry-history program might need a portable handwashing station station for hands-on demonstrations, depending on its site and activities.

The industry sits beside farming, ranching, and the state reformatory in OHS's description of the local economy, showing that the town developed around several kinds of work.

Granite's state reformatory opened in 1910

The Oklahoma State Reformatory opened in Granite in 1910 as a medium-security institution. The facility became one of the town's defining employers and institutions, though OHS's account gives a historical inmate count from the early 2000s rather than current operating information.

A future authorized maintenance crew at a correctional site would need site-specific approval before considering a contractor sleeper trailer. That distinction matters when describing a long-lived public facility: historical presence does not establish present status.

Granite began receiving treated water from a regional plant in 2002

In 2002 Granite began receiving water from an osmosis plant operated by the Quartz Mountain Regional Water Authority between Granite and Lone Wolf. The arrangement preceded the new meter project approved in 2026, showing two distinct stages of water infrastructure: a regional supply source and a planned modernization of local metering.

For crews working on any authorized connection or distribution upgrades, a contractor sleeper trailer could provide temporary accommodation at an approved base.

Granite's post office opened before the town was platted

A post office was established on December 6, 1889, more than a decade before K. C. Cox platted the townsite. The name came from the stone found in the nearby mountains. This sequence places an early federal service and the landscape itself ahead of the formal real-estate plan that followed in 1900.

At a future local-history event, a portable restroom trailer can be part of the site plan while the early timeline remains the focus.

The Granite Enterprise began in the town's first railroad year

The Granite Enterprise was established in May 1900, the same year rail service and the formal town plat arrived. The newspaper gave the community a local record as businesses opened and quarrying expanded. A future archive event could put a portable restroom trailer by the visitor entrance if the chosen venue lacks public facilities.

OHS says it continued to inform residents in the early twenty-first century, but that historical account does not establish its present publication schedule.

Granite counted 1,627 residents in the 2020 census

Granite's population rose to 2,065 in 2010 and stood at 1,627 in the April 2020 census. The census figure follows a history of rail growth, quarrying, and public institutions, but it does not measure daytime workers, regional visitors, or attendance at a particular event.

An organizer considering a portable restroom trailer should estimate actual attendance and existing facility capacity. It provides scale for the town, not a head count for a future gathering.
