Glencoe’s post office preceded the sale of town lots

The post office, first spelled Glenco, was established on December 6, 1899. Town lots went on sale the following April, as the Eastern Oklahoma Railway gave the settlement a reason to take shape. A future railway-history display could host a portable restroom trailer near its venue without implying the tracks still carry passenger trains.

A postmaster persuaded Washington to spell it Glencoe

The town’s first post-office spelling was Glenco. Editor and postmaster J. Hunter Williams persuaded the department to change it to Glencoe in 1901, explaining that the name recalled a Scottish pass. OHS notes residents also offered other explanations. A future local-history event could place a portable restroom trailer near its display area.

Glencoe became a trading center for area farms

Wheat, cotton, corn, livestock, and later alfalfa supported the Glencoe area, with the town functioning as a trading center. Its businesses included gins, an elevator, stores, a livery, and a butcher shop. If a future farm day needs handwashing near demonstrations, a portable handwashing station station could fit the site plan.

Two banks served Glencoe before the 1914 fire

At the start of the twentieth century, Glencoe had two banks alongside cotton gins, a grain elevator, groceries, a hotel, and other businesses. The commercial district was nearly destroyed by fire on January 22, 1914. A future heritage walk could set a portable restroom trailer at an outdoor gathering point, away from historic storefronts.

Fire swept through downtown Glencoe on January 22, 1914

A devastating fire almost entirely destroyed Glencoe’s business district on January 22, 1914. Some businesses rebuilt, but the blaze stunted the town’s growth. The event is a documented local emergency, not evidence of a present fire risk. For a future preservation program, a portable restroom trailer could serve visitors at a separate venue.

Some Glencoe businesses rebuilt after the downtown blaze

The 1914 fire did not end Glencoe’s commercial life: some businesses were rebuilt, though OHS says the event stunted future growth. That distinction tells a more complete story than the loss alone. If a future walking tour visits the commercial district, organizers could use a portable restroom trailer at a designated staging area.

A 1946 attempt to rob the state bank turned deadly

An attempted middle-of-the-night robbery of the Glencoe State Bank in 1946 ended with one robber dead and two others arrested and convicted. The episode belongs to a specific bank and date, rather than a generalized crime claim about town life. A future historical presentation could offer a portable restroom trailer at its event site.

Cashier Clarence McGinty helped stop the bank robbery

Bank cashier Clarence McGinty helped foil the 1946 robbery attempt. OHS identifies him as the son of Billy McGinty, a Rough Rider, adding a family connection to the town’s account of the incident. A future history exhibit could set a portable restroom trailer near its audience area while keeping the story grounded in its date.

Can the facilities be coordinated as one site plan?

Yes. Share how the units need to work together, along with placement, utility, delivery access, and servicing requirements. Final configuration and availability are confirmed for the project.

What information helps plan a project in Payne County?

A project address, crew size, rooming needs, dates, access and placement details, available utilities, and the supporting services you want to include.

Glencoe was still noted for a strong school system

At the time of the OHS town account, Glencoe maintained a post office and a strong school system, alongside its bank, café, antiques shops, and convenience store. Those services distinguish the community from a vanished railroad stop. A future school event could consider a portable shower trailer for athletes if the facilities are needed and permitted.

Glencoe counted 500 residents in April 2020

After slow decline and resurgence, the census recorded 500 Glencoe residents in April 2020. The number follows a higher 1980 count of 490, a near match separated by four decades, and a 2010 count of 601. For a future town celebration, planners should size a portable restroom trailer to expected attendance, not census totals.
