Two hundred citizens petitioned for Fort Towson’s townsite

When the Arkansas and Choctaw Railway reached eastern Choctaw County in 1902, two hundred male citizens petitioned to buy 160 acres for a townsite near the old fort. The survey was completed in December, after which the Interior Department approved it. A future streetscape project could base a restroom trailer at a permitted construction compound, away from business access.

An artesian spring influenced the townsite location

Boiling Springs lay along the northern edge of the Fort Towson townsite and fed Gates Creek; the spring helped make the location attractive when citizens petitioned for the 160-acre plat in 1902. The water source is a documented site factor, not a claim about today’s drinking-water supply. A future outdoor heritage gathering could use a event restroom trailer near its public area.

Lumber became a major employer around Fort Towson

In the 1900s, Wright Hopson acquired timber rights and sold them to Pine Belt Lumber Company; the company’s sawmill helped make lumber prominent in the surrounding region. This is county-level industry history, not evidence of a mill still operating in town. A future mill-site redevelopment crew could use a handwashing station station at its authorized base.

A bottling works and sweet-potato dryer joined Fort Towson’s shops

The early town’s commercial mix included a bottling works, sweet-potato drying plant, cotton gin, two banks, two hotels, and boarding houses. Along with the sawmill, these businesses made Fort Towson a hub for eastern Choctaw County. A future downtown event that interprets this history might place a mobile kitchen trailer beside its food vendors, separate from the historical businesses.

Fort Towson’s post office began with Thomas Fennell

Thomas Fennell built the first post office in Fort Towson and served as its first postmaster. OHS describes the office as one of Oklahoma’s oldest continually operating post offices, though it does not give a current operating-status verification in this historical town entry. For future exterior repairs, a contractor sleeper trailer could house a crew at a separately approved work site.

Fort Towson had several all-women town councils in the late 1950s

The town history records several years of all-women town councils in the late 1950s. That detail is a civic milestone in Fort Towson’s own municipal record, distinct from the nearby military post’s history. A future local-government program could put a event restroom trailer outside its meeting venue for public attendance.

Doaksville Lodge 279 continued meeting in Fort Towson

OHS traces Doaksville Lodge 279 to 1852 and says it met in Fort Towson; it was among Oklahoma’s earliest Masonic lodges. The lodge predates the town’s 1902 plat, reflecting a community history that spans the old settlement and the later railroad town. A future lodge anniversary outdoors could use a event restroom trailer close to the gathering area.

Local residents organized support for Lake Raymond Gary

In the late 1950s, local advocates formed the Gates Creek Dam Association and sold about four hundred memberships to support a lake and state park that Gov. Raymond Gary authorized. The campaign joined civic organizing with a regional recreation project. For a future lakeside volunteer day, a event restroom trailer could be placed at an approved event site, not assumed to be part of the original campaign.

Fort Towson extended its limits to include lake residents

Fort Towson expanded its town limits in 1979 to include residents around Lake Raymond Gary. OHS also records local Fourth of July fireworks and a Christmas boat parade at the lake in its account of early twenty-first-century community life. A future public event there may find a shower and restroom combination trailer useful, subject to current park and event approval.
