A railroad depot put Fairfax near a bypassed Osage village

In 1903 the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway built a line from Kaw City to Ralston through the Osage Reservation, bypassing the Osage village of Gray Horse. Lew A. Wismeyer persuaded the planners to place a depot nearby and arranged a forty-acre townsite. He also objected to the proposed station name, Coda, and suggested Fairfax instead. A present-day heritage survey could use sleeper trailers for a field crew while avoiding any implication that the historic right-of-way is open to public access.

The Osage Nation retained title to Fairfax’s townsite land

The Osage Nation retained title to the original Fairfax townsite acreage, so surveyed lots were first occupied by right rather than owned outright. A townsite bill followed in 1904; on March 3, 1905, Congress provided for the land to be sold at public auction, with proceeds credited to the Osage. The sequence is important to the town’s origin and land record. Any modern site crew planning work near an historic parcel would need ownership and access confirmed before placing portable handwashing stations.

Fairfax’s 1910 booster edition described a $45,000 public school

A 1910 Fairfax newspaper booster edition described a $45,000 public school building alongside local businesses and churches. The State Historic Preservation Office’s town survey cites that edition as a record of Fairfax’s civic landscape at the time. The figure is historical reporting, not a current valuation. If a future school-site preservation project required temporary facilities, portable restroom trailers could support contractors away from student entrances.

Fairfax’s First National Bank and Masonic Lodge earned historic listing

The First National Bank and Masonic Lodge in Fairfax is listed on the National Register of Historic Places under number 84003393. The property joins several other Fairfax resources recognized for their historical significance, including two banks and a school. A future preservation crew would need to work within the site’s approval and conservation requirements; portable restroom trailers could provide restroom access at a separate staging area.

Lincoln Colored School’s 1929 construction bid was $998

The National Register documentation for Fairfax’s Lincoln Colored School records a 1929 construction bid of $998 awarded to Walter L. Gray. Before classes began in the building, Black students met at the home of Frank and Carrie Miles. The school, at 171 NE Walnut, was later listed on the National Register. For a future preservation survey, portable handwashing stations could give a field crew temporary washing facilities while keeping work clear of the historic structure.

A 1923 bombing in Fairfax became part of the Osage murder investigation

In March 1923, a bomb destroyed the Fairfax home of Osage couple Rita and William E. Smith, killing them and their housekeeper. FBI records place the bombing among the cases investigated during the Osage murders, a period of targeted violence against Osage people. OHS estimates vary, but says many suspicious deaths occurred in or near Fairfax. A future history event should center Osage accounts and sources; combined shower and restroom trailers could provide visitor facilities at an approved venue.

Alex Tallchief built Fairfax’s theater in 1928

The Tall Chief Theater was built in 1928 by Alex Tallchief, and his daughters Maria and Marjorie performed there as children, according to the theater’s history. The venue now has plans to become the Maria and Marjorie Tallchief Performing Arts and Event Center; those plans should not be confused with a claim that the conversion is complete. If a future event takes place during work, portable restroom trailers could provide temporary restroom access for visitors.

Maria Tallchief was born in Fairfax in 1925

Maria Tallchief was born in Fairfax on January 24, 1925, to Alexander and Ruth Porter Tall Chief. The Oklahoma Historical Society records that she learned Osage traditions from her grandmother, Eliza Bigheart Tall Chief, before her family moved to California when she was eight. Her later ballet career began far beyond this town, but Fairfax remains part of her early biography. A future cultural program could plan combined shower and restroom trailers for guests at an approved venue.

Marjorie Tallchief grew up in Fairfax before an international ballet career

Marjorie Tallchief was raised in Fairfax with her siblings and became a ballet dancer of Osage descent. The Oklahoma Historical Society identifies her as the first American Indian to become première danseuse étoile at the Paris Opera. She was born in Denver during a family trip, so the accurate Fairfax connection is her upbringing, not her birthplace. A future dance-history event could use portable restroom trailers to serve visiting audiences.

Fairfax and Ralston schools consolidated in 1990

The Fairfax and Ralston school systems consolidated in 1990 to form Woodland Public Schools, according to the Oklahoma Historical Society. The change brought two local school systems together under one name and serves as a concrete milestone in Fairfax’s modern civic history. A future school district gathering or construction project could consider portable shower trailers for temporary facilities, planned around the actual site and attendance.

WPA crews built Fairfax’s school stadium and athletic fields in 1936

The Fairfax School Stadium and Athletic Fields were built through the Works Progress Administration in 1936, according to Oklahoma’s New Deal project inventory and the state preservation survey. The complex is a local example of Depression-era public works tied to school life. A future grounds restoration would need to confirm the site’s present condition and approvals; portable restroom trailers could support a field crew during the work.
