Brooksville was first called Sewell

Brooksville was established in 1903 as Sewell, named for a white doctor who owned land nearby and treated residents. In 1912, the town took the name Brooksville in honor of A. R. Brooks, a Black cotton buyer and farmer. A future local-history exhibit could use office trailer for a future local-history project as temporary staff space, not as part of the founding story.

Brooksville is one of Oklahoma’s surviving historically Black towns

The Oklahoma Historical Society identifies Brooksville as one of Oklahoma’s more than fifty All-Black towns and one of thirteen still existing at the beginning of the twenty-first century. That history describes a community founded through Black settlement and self-determination. Any future preservation work should respect that context; restroom trailer for a future community-led preservation project could serve a contractor only at a site selected by the community.

St. John’s Baptist Church dates to Brooksville’s first decade

Rev. Jedson White organized St. John’s Baptist Church in 1906; the congregation built a church that OHS says still exists. White also encouraged African Americans in the South to settle in Brooksville. For a future repair authorized by the congregation, portable restroom trailer for a future church restoration crew could give tradespeople restroom access while work is under way.

A Santa Fe station connected Brooksville to a wider market

Brooksville’s early business district included a Santa Fe Railroad station, three hotels, two doctors, and two mills. Those services developed in a town designed to attract Black settlers and support local livelihoods. sleeper trailer for a future infrastructure crew could be part of a future infrastructure crew’s temporary base near an approved rail or utility job.

Banneker School opened in 1924 with Rosenwald Fund support

With Rosenwald Fund assistance, Brooksville built a new Banneker School in 1924. The rock building had four large rooms, a 300-seat auditorium, library, and domestic-science room—an unusually detailed record of the educational space the community created. shower trailer for a future school renovation crew could support a future school-site contractor at a location approved by the district.

George McLaurin taught at Brooksville’s Banneker School

George W. McLaurin taught at Banneker School before becoming the first African American graduate student at the University of Oklahoma, as the OHS account notes. His connection gives Brooksville’s school history a link to the later legal and academic struggle over segregation. A future education-history exhibit could stage office trailer for a future education-history exhibit crew for a small project team.

A fire led Brooksville to replace the original Banneker building

After a fire, Brooksville replaced the original Banneker building with a wooden school that served students until the school closed in 1968. The loss and replacement form a separate chapter from the original 1924 construction. If a future rehabilitation project works on a surviving school-era structure, portable restroom trailer for a future school-building rehabilitation crew could provide facilities at the approved work zone.

The former school continued as a community center

When Banneker School closed, the building changed use rather than disappearing: OHS says it became Brooksville’s community center and stands beside the new city hall. That reuse kept a school-era structure in civic life after classes ended. restroom trailer for a future community-center project could support a future community-center repair crew without implying a past rental.

A declining cotton market challenged Brooksville’s local economy

The Oklahoma Historical Society places Brooksville’s population decline in the context of a falling cotton market and the Great Depression, which drove many residents away. The town survived despite losing much of its earlier population. A future agricultural-site restoration project might use laundry trailer for a future agricultural restoration crew for its crews, but the source documents economic change, not a specific response camp.

Brooksville incorporated in October 1972

After decades of change, Brooksville incorporated in October 1972. The town’s later census counts—72 residents in April 2020—show a small municipality that has persisted through the loss of its school and many residents. For a future public-works assignment, portable restroom trailer for a future municipal work crew could provide a nearby facility if the town approves the staging plan.
